It appears that this issue has been expressed by many people who have seen no changes.
Firstly, I am ultimately very disappointed with the values of this restaurant. They certainly could have found a way to maintain the quality of the food, but their focus is not on the quality and experience of the customers. There is no care in what they do, and certainly they have lost customers because of it, myself being one. In a couple of months, I will return to this restaurant and update my review in accordance with my experience.
Some of my former-Black-Walnut-Cafe-loving acquaintances and friends have a gluten allergy. Many people said they went to Black Walnut Cafe for a gluten-free meal and nearly everything was below low-quality. One family said everything they got for the gluten-free breakfast was almost inedible, and some things were. The fruit, pancakes, etc., and the manager tried to compensate for the food with some gluten free desserts which were dry, hard, and stale. The family showed me pictures, and the food looked unappealing and old, as though it had been sitting out for days. Many gluten-free people have shared similar stories from this restaurant.
Gluten-free people deserve a better experience of food. I spoke to a long-time employee at Black Walnut Cafe, whose name I will not mention for privacy. He said that the food preparation and ingredients decreased significantly in quality, and that many customers are disappointed and regular customers never returned.
Many of those I met with online spoke first of their disappointment with the hummingbird cake, as well as how the overall food went down in quality. One woman said her parents absolutely LOVED the hummingbird cake before they changed the recipe and the family never went back.
I looked at the hummingbird cake recipe and it is quite a complicated cake. I myself once took my sister to eat the cake, and to this day she remembers it. I recently went a second time, and now the frosting and cake are not nearly as good as they were before, they are completely changed and not at all worth remembering, to say the least.
With great care I have taken this matter into consideration, and I truly hope to see a change. I used to be most delighted with this place, and my disappointment is of equal measure, especially after hearing the disappointments of like-minded people who...
Read moreMy husband & I tried Black Walnut for breakfast on Friday around 8:30 am. It was a spot we enjoyed several times before for lunch & dinner but our first time to try for breakfast. We were greeted pleasantly at the door and given menus. It was not crowded so seating was plentiful. We ordered at the table from my phone.
We waited awhile for drinks and when none arrived I went to the counter and explained I’d ordered from the phone, how did we get our drinks. The attendant said drinks were self serve if not from the bar and she gave me cups and glasses, which I filled at the beverage center and picked up utensils, napkins and Tabasco. A bit later, a server showed up with our drinks and wasn’t at all pleasant when she saw we had them already. We found this curious.
A while later two different servers brought pancakes with breakfast sausage, eggs, a bowl of fruit and a ham & cheese omelet. The cooked food was only barely warm, the mound of butter on the pancakes would not even melt. The scrambled eggs were on a side plate with no garnish and were very dry and had little flavor. There was a small ramekin of syrup but it was not nearly enough for a stack of pancakes. The sausage was cut very thick and must have been cooked in advance as both patties were dry and frankly too tough to enjoy. The ham & cheese omelet was folded eggs with sliced ham, a slice of unmelted smoked cheddar, cubed potatoes, onions & peppers all stacked atop the eggs with a slice of unbuttered wheat toast, and ramekins of salsa & blueberry compote were on the side. It was unappetizing both in appearance and flavor. We would have liked butter for the toast and additional syrup; however no-one checked back with us and I was reluctant to go back to the counter after the first server’s reaction to us having drinks.
It was a wholly disappointing experience and at the price isn’t something we will give a second chance...
Read moreWe were visiting from Dallas and decided to stop by the Black Walnut Cafe since our local Allen location sadly closed. Let me just say — it was absolutely worth the drive! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, clean, and full of charm. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and made us feel right at home. You can tell they care about customer service here — they were attentive without being overbearing, and every interaction felt genuine.
We ordered a couple of breakfast items and were blown away by how fresh and flavorful everything was. I had the omelette, and it was cooked to perfection — fluffy, packed with delicious ingredients, and seasoned just right. My guest ordered one of the Benedicts (the Blackstone), and it was equally impressive. The eggs were perfectly poached, the hollandaise was silky and flavorful, and the crispy bacon gave it the perfect texture. The portion sizes were generous, but not overwhelming — definitely a great value for the quality of food you’re getting.
Another thing we appreciated was how smoothly the whole experience went. The food came out hot and quickly, and we never felt rushed. The ambiance is ideal for a relaxed brunch or even a casual business meeting. You can enjoy a gourmet meal in a laid-back setting without the fuss of a high-end restaurant.
Overall, we were really impressed. It’s clear that Black Walnut Cafe hasn’t lost its touch — even though the Allen location is no longer around, this visit more than made up for it. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in town. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a consistently delicious brunch spot with...
