My wife and I visited Truluck's in The Woodlands for our anniversary.
If you read the reviews, and the menu, and look at the pictures online... it is exactly what it says it is, a fine dining seafood restaurant.
FOOD:
The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful. However, this is where they get the biggest ding to their overall score. Here's what we had: The calamari - It was full of flavor and cooked well. I preferred the mustard sauce, my wife the sweet sauce. The portion size is large. I would definitely order it again. The Lobster bisque - This was possibly the biggest let down of the meal. Not because it was bad, but because we both felt it was too rich. It needs to be dialed back a little on this one. Though I enjoyed it, I would not order it again (-0.15 stars). Caesar salad - In my experience, the more a restaurant leans towards fine-dining, the more lemon forward the Caesar salad tastes. This was the case, but the lemon wasn't overpowering. It was much more of a complimentary flavor. I enjoy Caesar salads in general, and I enjoyed this one. If only the tiniest complaint, the croutons were a little too hard. I would still order it again. Parmesan rolls - They were fresh, soft, and delicious. No complaints. I would order them again, though we probably didn't need them. Miso-glazed Sea Bass - My wife ordered this entrée. It was beautifully plated. However, the Miso glaze was too much for her. She was ready to send it back, but (because it was Sea Bass and I had never had it before) I gave it a try. The glaze was overpowering, but I only tasted the glaze by itself. I went back for one more taste before the manager took it away, and when combined with the fish (and the slaw on top), the glaze made much more sense to me. If you do not like Miso or have never had Miso, you may want to avoid this one. The crab fried rice was nice, but relatively unnoticed. I would order it again, my wife would not (-0.1 star). Mediterranean Branzino - I ordered the Branzino. The only thing I was disappointed in was the plate presentation (-0.1 star). For being 20% more expensive then the next highest priced fish, I would expect a better looking plate. There was a taramasalata, but it was served under the fish. You could barely see it. It would be more appealing to have an authentic Greek salad, or chopped olive salad served on top of the (or next to) the fish. I would order it again, if it came with a chopped olive salad on the side of the plate. Dessert was their version of a Baked Alaska - It was complimentary for our anniversary, so it's hard to accurately critique it... but I will. Full disclosure, I am not a sweets fanatic. I generally don't love merengues. This one was good. The coffee ice cream layer was very good. The vanilla ice cream layer was good. The cake layer was okay. I wasn't a huge fan of the crushed Oreo layer.
DRINKS:
We both had iced tea. It was good. I had a couple Crown and cokes. They were good drinks, plenty of Crown, but not overwhelming. My wife had the "Voila". It was a fun vodka drink with dry ice. She enjoyed it.
AMBIANCE / SERVICE:
The service was top notch. Both my wife and I waited tables (and fine dining catering) for years, so there are certain things we notice more than the average diner.
The host greeted us and wished us a happy anniversary, as did the waiter (Joseph). Joseph was very professional and knowledgeable. He answered all of our questions. When my wife showed some concern with the flavor of her Sea Bass, he immediately got the manager involved. The teamwork that the staff showed was noticeable and impressive.
They had live music (Saturday), which was very good. My wife thought it was a little too loud. I felt the volume level provided a layer of privacy.
I did not care for the party of 8 sitting next to us. They were having a good time, but at the same time getting very loud and even cursing. This restaurant states it has a dress code, it should have a behavior code as well. (-0.25...
Read moreHi, I usually don't write reviews, however this time it would not be fair to keep the experience to myself. I was celebrating my birthday (58). We visited another restaurant in the area, and we didn't have reservation, and were told to leave because they couldn't do anything. I am disabled, my family had to drop me off in front of the restaurant, so I walked towards the next restaurant that looked so pretty outside and called my attention. Trulucks, I've never been there before and neither my family, but I am glad we did. It was a busy night and I asked for a table for 4. The young lady at the front Anne, tells me the dining area is full and only for reservations, however they will accommodate me in the tables around the bar. I sat in the lobby and in less than a minute I was told they have a table and only to wait to get it all done. Then another minute and I was guided to sit in a perfect table past the live music (a pianist). Wow! I have not sat in live music for a real while. What a blessing!! Then this girl shows up, sweet, radiant, pretty, her name is Erica. Once she learned it was my birthday, she brought stars to the table and had the patience to explain the menu. However, because my disability sitting in the tall stools it was something so hard for me. I told Erica my predicament and she understood and observe that I wasn't making this up. She asks for a moment to see what can be done, and then the same girl Anne guided us to the dining area with a lake view and we were welcome by the waitress in the area. My table has natural roses and Brittney was my waitress. I was sad and thought I was going to lose Erica but I am glad I didn't, she kept coming and brought more stars. Then I asked for a pina colada, and my party had champagne, it was ok if they couldn't make the pina colada, but the bartender did it for me (it was not in the menu). Then the aperitive's a shrimp cocktail and the meatballs!!!!! Delicious!!! In the dining room the menu has light on it!! The food was so fresh, the taste was so unique you can actually feel the spices, the texture!! I ordered the mediterranean bransino, one of my daughters has a gluten sensitivity and they have a gluten free menu. In addition to that in my table we ordered the hawaian ahi tuna, south australian lobster, and a vegan bolognese!! Everything more than delicious!!! Then, the fun part, desserts!!! It was my birthday and I have had many cakes in my life however that night it was the first time I have a cake with crushed Oreos, vanilla ice cream inside, and they bathe the cake in fire it looks so pretty!! My daughters choose a chocolate layer cake that they share it was huge!!! Again, all delicious, fresh, unique!! Then Erica came back with a rose just for me!! I requested to a young male waitress to please inform the manager I needed it to talk to him. Then Mr. Adam came along!! I reported to Mr. Adams about my amazing experience!! My heart still full of joy!!! I told him how precious this restaurant was to me is and how kind and sweet his staff had been to me and my family. Mr. Adam was grateful to hear my story and told me it is the policy of his company to work with the clients and exceed their expectations. It definitely happened to me. I was surprised to see Erica is younger than my own girls!! February was her birthday too. They all went beyond their duties to make us feel important that night. I may not go back, not because of the treat but because of budget. That experience is something to be receive once in a lifetime I am glad that was mine!!! To Erica, Anne, Brittney the bartender and Mr. Adams THANK...
