Where do I begin, we came through in a motorhome and the dining room was closed despite the sign saying dining room open on the roadside sign, we get to the door and it says due to reasons beyond our control the dining room is closed today. I assume that’s because of a staffing shortage just like many other restaurants so we really appreciated that they let us walk to the drive-through window and order food. We spent almost $60 and waited about 20 minutes for our order. At the end of that 20 minutes a staff member asks if she can see our receipt so she can verify that they have the order correct because they lost it. The order comes out and she locks the door behind her no time to check or verify and make sure everything is correct. The order was not correct so I decided to try and call I watched the manager look at the caller ID and decide not to answer that phone call. I walked around the drive-through to see that there was now a large line of cars in the drive-through so I decided to go back to trying to call. When I got back to the outside dining table we were eating at I saw said manager on the phone. So I figured great maybe he will answer when I call when he hangs up. I called again and he looks at the caller ID and laughs and decides to also not answer that phone call. At this point we just decide that we’re going to eat the food we have and then my friends food is burnt he ordered pulled pork and most of it was chars not edible. This whole time I’m still trying to call. Finally the drive-through line clears out so I walk up to the window. I told the woman at the window about the mistake and I see the manager in the background not doing much so I asked to speak to him and ask him why he decided to not answer my phone calls even though I saw him take the time to look at the caller ID. His response is what really made my blood boil, he said oh I sometimes answer the phone my response is why was my phone call not important enough, he did not have any other answer except for staffing shortage. I understand what the staffing shortage is doing to most dining but he was taking the time to look at the caller ID and carry-on with a conversation that he was having and standing at the food window and if somebody has called almost 10 times I would think that you would think that it is something you should answer and he proceeded to again try to blame the staffing shortage and I said yes but I saw you look at the caller ID and laugh and I know you saw me in the window trying to get your attention he got very frustrated with me and said ma’am I’m not arguing with you, and also tried to tell me that the burnt pulled pork was “the skin” I have been here many times while traveling and love this place and I’m so sad that this happened like this. I brought people that have never been here before and I was completely embarrassed by this place I hope that someone saves it and I hope that that manager does not continue to run it into the ground. And hopefully the next company he works for or even this company sends him to some sort of customer service training because clearly he...
Read moreI'd never seen this chain before and we were passing through on a long haul for work so figured we would give it a try. TL; DR: decent and you could do a lot worse for fast food BBQ.
I had my usual BBQ joint diagnostic order: pulled pork Sammy with fries. Coworker had chicken Sammy with sweet tea and Mac n cheese. Service was friendly and honestly I wasn't expecting table/bus service from a place like this but they gave it. I hope they're being paid accordingly, I didn't see any easy way to tip. Orders came out very very fast and I paid $7.something for my stuff. Not as cheap as Cook Out but not bad. The fries were unremarkable - frozen steak fries, season them yourself. Average sized portion. They were fine but I found myself eyeing my coworker's Mac with envy, it looked great. The pulled pork sammy was quite good, juicy pork and a good quality bun. Basic stuff but done well, if it was frozen and shipped in from out of town I could not tell. I should have gotten slaw so I could make it into a pseudo Memphis style, lesson learned but oh well, we weren't in TN and I don't like to mess around too much the first time at a new place. I got the hickory sauce expecting a traditional red BBQ sauce but it was more like a tangy aoli. Like maybe they just mixed BBQ sauce with mayo to make sort of a thousand island. In any case it was delicious even if it's not what I would have chosen if I'd known. It came in a ramiken rather than a packet, which tells me it might be made fresh on site. Not what I'd expect from fast food but very welcome!
My co-worker had nice things to say about the Mac and a middling review of the sandwich. Her tea was too sweet until she cut it with unsweet.
On the whole, it's not life changing BBQ but my standards are quite high and it exceeded my expectations. For a convenient stop on the highway, it really brightened up my day. I'll be back at some...
Read moreIt has been a while since I have eaten at Hog and Bones, but after my visit this morning I realized again why it's been so long. The food is hit or miss. This morning I ordered one of the meat breakfast platters and the only thing that tasted good was the eggs and bacon. The sausage and ham had a weird taste and the syrup that they give with the pancakes is not good and is basically heavy sugar water. I didn't even eat all my food because the flavor was lacking and I was just making myself eat something that I really didn't want to eat. I think if they made a few minor changes it could be a lot better experience for their patrons. For example, they need to be using real butter as opposed to whipped spread which is vegetable oil and has been linked to numerous health issues and not healthy for the body. I have tried my best to cut it out of my diet completely and whenever food is covered in it I can definitely tell. Secondly, the brands and quality of the condiments needs to be improved. The little syrup packet that they gave with the pancakes is not good. They have sugar free and cane syrup options too, but I just want a good quality maple syrup or even an artificial maple syrup like log cabin or Miss butterworths or now what is referred to as Pearl milling company syrup will do and be much better and allow one to enjoy the pancakes at least. I will say that the service is excellent and they are very friendly. The soda dispenser isn't the best and the ratio of carbonated water to syrup is a little off. My soda was a bit syrupy, where I didn't enjoy it either. These small changes will lead to lower margins, but if you compensate that with better customer experiences where you would have more repeat business it would offset those lower margins with regards to improving your condiment variety and offering much more. Just my two cents, and thought I...
