The sushi quality was fresh, but there were definitely some things left to be desired... First, we were seated at a small round table when they were much larger more comfortable tables available and no one will seated after us, so it should be clear that we're not taking a table for four for two people. There were plenty of tables available but they stuck us in a small table because it was more convenient for them not to make up a new table. Second, the sushi combo prices were definitely on the high side for Toms River. I was a little shocked to be honest. Worse, the sushi dinner was lacking in several ways. First, many sushi dinners usually include a salad or miso soup or both. This was strictly à la carte. Second, instead of a nice assortment of sushi like the traditional sushi dinner would provide, it was a limited number repeated. The other issue with the sushi is that the nigiri rice was packed very loose and easily fell apart when I picked it up. I made sushi myself many times or parties and events, so I know a little bit what I'm talking about. The rice should have been more compact. In all fairness to this restaurant, mini sushi places already have gone to this same model of offering only a few different pieces as variety. More traditional Japanese restaurants will still serve the larger assortment. Now comes the mistake... I specifically ask before I was served how many pieces and what's the difference between small medium and large which was priced at $35, $70 and up. I was told it's based on how many people are dining. No discounts for larger quantities. I was told I would get nine pieces of sushi and a spicy tuna roll. For $35 that's the minimum I would expect. However, when the dish was served it was only six pieces. I mentioned the oversight and there was some discussion, they blamed it on a new sushi chef and gave me three more of the same pieces I had already eaten. I mentioned that since they made a mistake maybe they could slip me one piece that I'd really like, the waitress said she'd talk to someone and never responded after that. I guess the answer was no and she didn't want to deliver the bad news. In terms of the waitress, that was the highlight of the day. She was perky, pleasant, and it wasn't her fault that only six sushi pieces showed up. It would have been nice to get my water glass filled from time to time during the dinner, but she was working the room by herself so don't fault her for that. Overall it was a nice dinner, the sushi quality was very good and very fresh. Top quality. The venue is good, very spacious with lots of meeting area. Big generous bar that was still open when we left. I like the place and I may go again, but it's definitely a splurge for what you're getting in my opinion. If you feel the pleasant waitress and the beautiful setting is worth...

Unfortunately, they don't let you give something no stars.

My wife and I stopped in for lunch a few days ago and NOTHING was good. We ordered from the sushi / lunch menu, not the Habachi menu. The service was good, but all the food was bad.

The salad was drenched in a bland ginger sauce. The Miso soup was bland to the point of tastelessness, and the entrees were borderline inedible. I got the shrimp Pad Thai, which was, again, bland and not worth picking up my chop sticks. They used the cheapest frozen shrimp, which were mushy. My wife's General's Chicken was inedible. It was greasy and made with the worst red meat turned brown I've ever had. She couldn't eat.

The worst was, as we left, a blond haired woman came over and asked about the chicken. (I managed to choke down the Pad Thai because I was starving.) I told her it wasn't good, and she offered to take it off the bill. Nice of her. I told her no thanks, I'd rather pay for it, and she offered me a gift certificate for a meal. I again said no thanks, I'd rather just pay the bill because I didn't have any desire to return.

As I left I heard her call me an a$$hole. Nice.

There's better Pad Thai in Toms River at the Wang off of Route 37, and they're not charging you $7.00 for a...

Proceed with caution if you have a food allergy. I told the girl on the phone before placing my order I had a seafood allergy. Once I was done placing my order I had asked if she had gotten the seafood allergy written down. She replied yes. I picked up my food & brought it home. We order vegetable spring rolls. My husband had asked if I wanted one, I declined eating one at the moment and he bit into his. THANK GOD it wasn’t me because he spit it out saying there’s shrimp in there. I immediately called them and told them there’s a seafood allergy and we were given shrimp when we asked for a VEGETABLE spring roll. She proceeded to tell me that they are premade and are just heated up. Okay.. so why wasn’t I told there is shrimp in their “vegetable” spring rolls? Why didn’t the kitchen bring it to the attention of the front desk if she was unaware to either call me back or let me know when I picked it up they were unable to fulfill that portion of the order due to the shrimp being in the spring rolls? If I had bitten into that, it would’ve been an epi pen injection and a trip to the hospital due to pure negligence. I will NEVER order from this...

Just came back from an awesome dinner at Shogun. We have been looking for good Peking Duck. Found it here. To start husband had a green salad, pinot grigio. I had hot and sour soup with Sauvignon Blanc. Delicious. Duck took a little while but less time than at other places. We were seated right by the window. Beautiful view. The Duck when it came, along with not only the regular sides of scallion and cucumber straws, but 3 different sauces. So amazing, crispy delicious skin. We finished with Mochi ice cream. Different and yummy. Cannot recommend highly enough!! Yes, it's expensive, but if you go in expecting that, you won't be surprised. Our waiter was extremely nice, considerate and friendly.
