785 Kitchen — Restaurant in Topeka

I have eaten here twice in the past 3 days. The food is excellent, however it's likely I'll not return. 1st night I had the fried catfish (excellent) with red beans and rice, gumbo (not) fried okra (excellent) and cornbread. The lady ahead of me had the fried catfish as well. She was asked if she wanted hot sauce for her fish. She replied yes and was given 2 small containers. When I was served, didn't inquiry if I wanted hot sauce said thx and disappeared in the back. Additionally once I arrived home I discovered I had been given 2 orders of beans and rice, no gumbo. Didn't dissuade me from returning yesterday. It's some of the best Cajun I've had in quite sometime. Yesterday I went with the chicken fried steak/w country gravy. Always been a favorite of mine. Along with it I had mashed taters also w/gravy, fried green tomatoes, cornbread and ordered a extra side of gumbo for $5. Upon arriving home, I discovered once again I was served rice and beans instead of gumbo. 1st time a simple mistake. 2nd time, not so much. While the rice and beans are dang good, they're not $5 good. Really wanted to try the gumbo obviously. Guess I'll not find out what others have raved about. 2 trips, $30 spent for a huge disappointment. I do wish them well and highly recommend the food. I got the Gumbo and my Wife got the wings. Our sides included mashed potatoes, baked Mac N Cheese and Cornbread, as well as Gooey Cake.

Everything was phenomenal!!!! Hands down the BEST Kitchen in Topeka!

The Gumbo was perfectly seasoned, the sausage was tender as well as exquisitely cooked chicken and rice.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to try any of the Wings because I forgot to ask my wife for a bite befor they were gone, but I assume they were quite delicious - considering she normally doesn’t eat her food at a high pace.

The mashed potatoes and Mac N Cheese were eaten in the same bite (Of which I highly recommend you try for yourself) So as soon as the flavors blended I knew I shouldn’t eat anymore, otherwise I’d risk not sharing a single bite.

Don’t let the outside fool you! The food is absolutely amazing and the owner and worker are super friendly and made everything enjoyable. They were very interactive with our son who has autism. They helped him pick out chicken wings that he said were the top five that he has ever had, and coming from him that means a lot! My husband said the chicken fried steak and homemade gravy were great. Both of our mashed potatoes were absolutely delicious! The red beans and rice were on point and seasoned perfectly.
