We are fans of the old Torrance Da Maat and Jang Su Jang in the Bay Atea, we are so excited that they expanded and slightly moved to the new larger corner spot. The main reason we like it is they offer wider selections of Korean dishes beyond the typical tofu, BBQ, and bibimbap (which we love, too!)
Our experience was excellent. There is always a line, but the 20 minutes wait was more like 10-minutes for us at 5:30pm on a busy Saturday.
We tried the following: Ddukbokki : rice cake and fish cakes in sweat and spicy soup. This is #7 on the appetizer side, served on a fire pot. It’s highly recommended, especially on a cold evening. It’s not too spicy. I especially like the al dente rice cakes! Hamul Pajeon: seafood pancake, #6 on the Appetizer side. Always good for each person to have one and take the rest home! Beef Dolsot: the bibimbap served on a hot stone bowl, choice of beef, chicken, pork, or vegetarian. It was delicious! Woogouji Galbitang: beef rib soup with cabbages, #5 on the right hand side. This one didn’t standout compared to other amazing dishes. However, I do like the soup and the beef rib was tender and tasty.
The new location still has the wall of bowls as decor, but it’s much brighter and ‘open’ than before. I immediately noticed the seats are more comfortable as well.
Food was served very quickly, first the complimentary small appetizers (7 dishes). The rest of the dishes also all came out pretty quickly. This would work well if everyone orders their own, but we were doing family style, next time, we would have them serve in two batches so we can enjoy some dishes first.
Tips: There are two rooms that can be reserved for parties. The inside room fits 16, it’s a private setting especially with the door closed. The outside one fits 22, it’s surrounded by glass windows so it’s very nice and bright though less privacy.
Parking: plenty and free.
Ps, we also met the owner/manager, Heyoung, she was warm and friendly, offered to pack our...
Read moreStopped by Jang Su Jang in Torrance and the place was bustling, with only a few tables open for dine-in.
Ambiance (4/5): Lots of natural light mixed with warm-toned lighting creates a cozy and homey feel. The restaurant has plenty of space, with tables for both small groups and larger parties of up to 8. It was lively and loud inside, but in a good way—exactly the kind of noise level you’d expect at a thriving Korean spot. Beautifully decorated and welcoming.
Food (4/5): I ordered the Jangsu Bossam, which came with rice and two portion sizes of banchan. Everything was well-seasoned, with the cucumbers being the standout—crisp, fresh, and addictive. The bossam itself was flavorful and generously portioned (marketed for 2 but easily feeds 3). We also tried the bibimbap, which was satisfying and nicely done. Overall, both dishes were good, though not quite unforgettable.
Service (4/5): Since we ordered to go, I didn’t get the full dine-in experience, but ordering was quick, friendly, and efficient. I’ll update if I get the chance to try table service next time.
Overall: Solid Korean food in a cozy, busy setting. Worth returning to, though maybe not a place I’d find myself...
Read moreI grew up going to Cho Dang Tofu after Tae Kwon Do practice as a kid, and was absolutely devastated when it closed. Then, my sadness was almost immediately healed as I learned they were combining their two restaurants into one larger one (this one). Jang Su Jang has everything Cho Dang had and much more on the menu. The soondubu (tofu stew), is my favorite, though their cold noodle salads are unique and refreshing as well. Everyone I bring here enjoys it, and the new set-up is modern and cozy at the same time. Even if busy, the service is quick and reasonable, starting with the option of hot tea or cold water. If I have to wait, I find myself just grateful that their business is doing well so that they can stick around for a long time. The banchan sides are refillable and always delicious. As if that wasn't all good enough, there is plenty of parking, indoor and outdoor seating, and a party room in the back if you ever want to celebrate with a bigger group. I know I'll be coming back here for years to come. If the biggest problem is that you sometimes burn your mouth on the food because it's so tasty you just can't wait, well then you...
