I live in town, so we end up here periodically, the following are a list of impressions from the last couple of years.
1.) Their version of a Ceaser salad comes with tomatoes and mushrooms, but no croutons, no parm, and the dressing on the side. Avoid if you are looking for a classic Ceaser. I thought there had been some kind of mistake, but my waitress told me that "this is how we make it." House salad is a much better bet.
2.) Don't order anything with a pasta component. I've never had a pasta dish there that I didn't regret. Chicken French in particular was soggy and disappointing. Anything with the Alfredo sauce should be steered clear of at all costs.
3.) I ordered the meatloaf and mashed potatoes dinner not too long ago. The meat loaf was so loaded with bell peppers that it was overwhelming, and the brown gravy was nasty and not homemade (not that they claimed that it was, just beware).
4.) Baked potato comes with a tablespoon of sour cream and some kind of whipped not-butter.
5.) Fries are the skinny, breaded kind. Not my cup of tea, but may be yours.
6.) Iced tea is from a machine, not fresh brewed, heads up to picky tea drinkers.
7.) These days I tend to order a grilled chicken sandwich and baked potato (no "butter", extra sour cream). Don't get the lemon pepper or Cajun version of the chicken sandwich. The lemon pepper is especially gross.
8.) The key to a good visit to the village house is to avoid dinner items (especially those with pasta) and stick to the lunch menu. The chicken souvlaki wrap is hit or miss, but generally...
Read moreWriting this review pains me as I've always enjoyed coming here. Tonight we ordered take out. My boyfriend ordered one of his normally favorite dishes that his Mom makes, scalloped potatoes and ham, but had never had it from here. I ordered something I had before from here, and loved, the Buffalo Chicken Alfredo. The scalloped potatoes was on special. I also had a cup of French Onion, as the VH has one of my favorite recipes. We were told 10 mins. We live 10 mins away, and I made it in 15. Got it back home, and everything was ice cold. Even my soup. The scalloped potatoes and ham were served separate (not cut up ham baked in like him and I have both always had), and the potatoes were so loaded with flour that's all you could taste. My meal, not being a special today, was clearly microwaved left overs that clearly was never even nuked to a decent temp. My garlic bread that comes with the meal didn't even have garlic on it and was so tough from either being frozen and re-heated or left to sit, that I could barely bite into it. The only thing decent was the piece of ham that we saved for breakfast tomorrow. We spent $40 and barely ate...
Read moreI agree with Brandon on the service. Out of 10 visits you may have a bad one. But most of the time it's reasonable. You may have to wait for coffee from time to time, but, usually you'll be satisfied. I've only had one visit where I actually got up and walked out without paying. The "man on duty" offered to make it right... but, I never send food back to be fixed or re-cooked at a restaraunt. I've watched the movie "waiting"... if you know what I mean. It is what it is, and isn't what it isn't. Home cooking, not a steakhouse or a seafood house. Breakfast from $8-$15. Dinners from $10-$25. All tip included and out the door. Cleanliness is on par. Coffee is average. Desserts are average. Food is what you'd expect at home from a average quality spouse's kitchen talent. Good variety menus. Overall a pretty good choice, and recommended destination in the general area if you're looking for a place to eat. MacDonald's, BK, Subway, and a Timmy's around the corner if you want to save a few pennies and time. For sitting down, this is the...
