We went the Whitlock last night and although the setting was very nice we ended up disappointed with meal. Started with cocktails (Wood & Whitlock and the Black Hole Sun) - both very good and strong! We then had the Tuna Tartare as a starter which was the beginning of the disappointment. it comes with a lot of avocado a little bit of Tuna and maybe 5 chips. I understand that a lot of chips would look bad on a nice plate but if you are basically going to serve guacamole, then I think we might need more chips to dip with. Overall the flavor was good, although a bit under-seasoned (theme of the food last night). For entrees we did the smoked chicken and Chorizo & Shrimp burger. Starting with the chicken, that is really where they struggled. Chicken was not cooked correctly (soggy skin, over cooked breast, under cooked thigh), had little to no salt. The grits were incredibly bland and saltless and the two pieces of carrot were a non-factor. For $27 at a nice restaurant, completely inexcusable. The burger was probably the best part of the dinner but it was basically a thick piece of Chorizo and some good sauce. Although it was tasty it was very filling and I am not sure I am coming back to order that. Overall, the service, the drinks and the atmosphere are good but the food disappoints. Great place for after work cocktail or catch up with a friend but don't go out of your way searching for...
Read moreThis was our second time at this establishment and it will be our last. We came for lunch today with 4 people. On the good side: The food was good (but not great). They are dog friendly and we sat outside in the patio. My wife had scallops and French onion soup. I had the pulled pork sandwich. On the bad side: Halfway through the meal I found a six inch long hair in my food. A few minutes later my wife found a curly short hair in her soup. I am nearly 70 and in my life, I have found a few, but two in one day, that's not good odds, nor a good indication of the kitchen hygiene. We informed the waiter about both cases of hair in the food. Yet, nobody seemed to care. We care. Something is obviously wrong in this restaurant, behind the closed door of the kitchen. We will not trust them again. To make matters worse, delivery truck parked right behind us and was idling loudly for more than a half hour. Long after the delivery, the driver stayed in the truck eating. The staff never concerned themselves with this. It was loud and annoying, for all guests who sat outside, but the staff did not care. Those two things combined ruined our enjoyment, and...
Read moreI have read and heard great things about The Whitlock. Not sure what I was expecting but walking through the entrance, the atmosphere was not to my personal liking. Pleasant but just lacked warmth. A lot of wood. A lot of banquette seating which means many diners face the wall. I sat at the bar and the bar stools were uncomfortable.
First course was the Lobster BLT Rolls and they were amazing. One of the best lobster rolls I have ever eaten. I selected the spaghetti with shrimp entree which was blanketed in grated cheese which made the dish extremely dry. Usually grated cheese is an option offered at the table but this dish was doused in it by the chef in the kitchen. Too bad because this entree could be outstanding but the flavors are masked by the cheese. And I love grated cheese however this was just too much.
Service at the bar was good and adequately friendly. Food came out a little too fast. Would have preferred some time in between courses. After 2 glasses of wine it would have been nice to have my glass "topped off" which occurs at many restaurants when you eat at the...
