Making reservations for 6:45pm, we showed up a few minutes early and were quickly seated. I specifically requested a table across from the bar area and the friendly host offered my choice from a few tables. We chose the third table from the host stand.
Starting with a few appetizers, we opted in for the crab cakes, oysters and steak tartare. I found the crab cakes absolutely delicious. Completely jam-packed with crab. As for the oysters, I didn't expect them to have the vinaigrette already on them. I've always had any sort of sauces on the side as I enjoy my oysters raw with nothing on them. Nevertheless, the oysters were tasty. The steak tartare was phenomenal. Rich with the egg yolk on top and nicely seasoned. One of the best steak tartars I've had anywhere. The only complaint regarding the appetizers is, they oddly took almost 30 minutes to arrive to our table. I found this odd and definitely not off to a good start.
Onto mains, I've opted in for the wagyu special with a side of lobster tail. The steak I found was a bit under seasoned and got most of its flavour from the accompanying sauce on top. I requested the steak medium-rare and after taking half of it home and seeing it in a much better lighting, the steak was cooked much closer to rare and even safe to say, a blue steak. The lobster tail was incredibly gigantic and was tender and succulent. Only complain there is it was slightly lukewarm.
I have to make note the service was impeccable. Rachel was friendly, professional and hospitable. Her service and professionalism are a perfect 10/10.
I'm a little hesitant on whether I would return to Max Chophouse. From the 30-minute wait for appetizers, to an under-done/under-seasoned steak. Mind you, the wagyu special ran $115 for the steak only. I expect the temperature to be perfect, let alone the seasoning. The silverware had some soap spots on them which is a pet peeve of mine especially for a fine-dining restaurant.
Beautiful and clean restaurant, incredibly tight and small bathrooms in the back. With less than several tables inside, the restaurant can be quite loud. Not sure if this is just the crowd it attracts, or the fact the bar takes up half the restaurant.
Again, on the fence if I would return with what...
Read moreWe just left here and I can't help but leave a review immediately.
My husband, my sister and her boyfriend took me out to celebrate the coming birth of my son in one month and we wanted somewhere special since we know we won't be out again for a while.
My sister suggested here because of the menu and I read some reviews and saw how great their service was, so we chose here. All said and done after dinner, appetizers, drinks and desserts, we spent a little over $500 for the four of us.
The food did not disappoint. We had a later dinner- we were served at around 6:45. It was a quiet night. At about 9- we were wrapping up when a man came over to say that a large party was waiting to be seated and then aggressively bent down in my husband's and my face and told us to "wrap it up" and walked off. At first, I thought it was the manager talking to us like that.
When the waitress came to see what he had said to us because he was getting rude at the bar, she explained that her hands were tied because he is the old co-owner and she didn't know what to do. As she was talking to other staff, another member from the mans party came over and yet again got very nasty with us about not leaving.
Our backs were to them, we had no idea our table was needed as they were close to closing and no one that works there ever gave us any reason to think our table was needed.
I asked to see a manager or owner. Apparently the owner was at their sister restaurant and there was no manager on site. So after spending over $500, we were told "I'm sorry you were accosted by him, but I don't know what to do". No one called the owner, no one offered us a thing. Just I'm sorry as we walked out angry, embarrassed and felt like we did something wrong.
This left a lasting impression for sure! As nice as the restaurant was and as good as the meal was, we know now that they don't value their customer's experience at all. Apparently, you're only treated as a human here if you used to own it.
We will absolutely never be back. We will never support the other restaurant either. And I will make sure others know how the paying customers are treated. Absolutely...
Read moreI gave it the 3 stars for the food alone. The entrees weren't bad; Though it wasn't the best food I've had in this area either. It did satisfy my craving for a piece of red meat. Now let me get into the details. My husband and I are no strangers to good quality restaurants and we have no problem paying a fair amount for a worthy experience. Unfortunately for the kitchen staff, the front-of-the-house staff makes this place not worth it. Max's on Monroe is a tiny average eatery, that dim's their lights, and overstaffs their packed too-tightly, two room restaurant. We were sat in the middle of the main walkway for servers racing to and from the kitchen. If I so much as moved my elbow slightly off the table or leaned to get my purse it could have caused a major accident with servers and food runners delivering hot plates. We felt as though we were sitting in the middle of a crowded highway. We were literally crammed into this spot, and as I looked around, I noticed others having difficulty finding room to move their chairs in and out from the table comfortably. The waiter was not only pretentious, but extremely rude, one of the worst I've ever had and that observation includes younger staff from run-of-the-mill chain restaurants. It was extremely loud and the constant flickering of the overhead lighting made us both dizzy. Basically if you are looking for a place with good food, and a cozy, romantic atmosphere, look elsewhere. If you are looking for an upscale, trendy place, with the latest in food favorites, keep moving. It is loud, and if your not a "regular" you are treated as if you are not part...
