Chester's is an established Cajun restaurant in the Buffalo area that has recently moved to this newer(larger) location. I had not eaten here before, and only heard about it from Joe at the barber shop across the street. I decided to stop in as I've been hard pressed to find Cajun style food in Buffalo that could break the medicore barrier.
Walking in the place has a very large dining room; it has a feel of an Italian restaurant with a classiness that could be best described as 'business casual'. Being as they have VERY recently moved I expect this - and especially the decor - to change to better fit a Cajun vibe.
The bar is a well laid out horseshoe style, and they surprisingly had a very nice selection of beers on draft - all laid out on a chalk board to easily read. I arrived after lunch, before dinner and the bar had a healthy amount of patrons. The bartender was attentive, kind, and had a great sense of humor. I felt like I was a daily patron at a 'neighborhood bar' within minutes of sitting down.
I ordered both the gumbo and the jambalaya, separately (to prevent one from cooling to much). The gumbo was first. It was very good, one of the better I had in the area. It came within 2-3 minutes of ordering, was temperature hot, the meats were firm and the rice was perfectly cooked. It was spicy on the palate but not inedible, the spice faded quickly with a sip of beer. It's honestly the best cooked gumbo I've had since N'arlins.
The jambalaya was a different story. There is nothing I can say negative about it. It came out as quick as the gumbo, and was on par with most of what I've had in and around Louisiana. For the price it's the best thing on the menu, and what I recommend to anyone as the first thing to order. All in all I spent longer than I expected here, and spent less money than I normally do at a good restaurant. While physically not 'cajun' in feeling, the food and hospitality we're without question right at home with the...
Read moreWe have lived around this location for years. We have seen restaurants come and go but I think Chester's is here to stay. It was an already established restaurant before moving to this location. We have wanted to check it out for a while but it always seems so busy (which is a plus!). We stopped in on a Friday night just before 5 PM. Parking was available. We were seated right away - 2 adults and one child. The atmosphere is really nice. Our waitress was super friendly and had great knowledge about the menu. She was also very nice to my child.
My husband ordered the beer battered fish fry - it was very good! The outside was crisp, no sogginess and the inside was flaky and moist. My son got the kids tenders and fries and really enjoyed them. I got the "Stinger Burger" - a beef patty with 2 mild tenders on top (mild, med, hot, BBQ), lettuce, tomato, onion on a hard roll. It was delish! It was a bit messy to eat but worth it. I got a side of their baked macaroni and cheese and again it was great. It was creamy with a baked layer of cheese on the top. The price was so reasonable for what we got. We will definitely be going again...
Read moreIts not bad and it's not amazing but it's good. Its very clean but simple inside casual vibes. Staff were attentive and super friendly. Most food was very flavorful. Greens in buffalo are usually pretty terrible and Chesters were actually kinda good for a northern restaurant. Blackened chicken had great flavor. The Mac and cheese disappointed me I may be wrong but I'm gonna guess it's stoffers and they melted a lil extra cheese on top it wasn't bad but i was really hoping for better considering its a cajun restaurant so if their just doctored up frozen stoffers so im glad i only got it as a side not one of the mac ontrees. Portions are ok enough some items were good price others slightly high for what you get. It's hard to find great southern or Cajun around here and this is good enough that I'd return when I want southern or cajun. I didn't love or hate it, I'd definitely go back and would say if you like cajun or southern definitely give them a try and decide yourself I certainly can't think of anything to say don't go. I'd give a 4 star but I appreciate local small businesses and know it's not easy...
