It was a quiet Monday night in Montauk. I popped into this place expecting a chill drink, maybe a little local charm. What I got instead was one of the most uncomfortable, disrespectful experiences I’ve ever had in a bar — and I’ve been to dive bars in rural gas stations that treated people better than this.

The bartender, a woman who I won’t dignify by naming, was shockingly rude from the moment I walked in. I tried to brush it off — maybe she was having a bad day. But what followed was blatant, offensive behavior that crossed every line. She made homophobic comments loud enough for the entire bar to hear, like it was some kind of joke — and trust me, no one was laughing. She didn’t backpedal, she didn’t apologize. She just kept going. The hostility was deliberate. Ugly. And dangerous.

In 2025, how is a place like this still operating like it’s the Wild West of hate speech?

I left shaken, humiliated, and furious. And honestly, sad — that this kind of disgusting behavior is still alive and well, and being served with a side of watered-down liquor in Montauk.

If you’re LGBTQ+, an ally, or just a decent human being with a conscience, do not give Marlena’s Pack Out your money, your time, or your presence. They don’t deserve it.

And to the owners: if you stand by her behavior, you’re just as complicit.

We have been coming to Montauk for years but always go to the main area not west lake. Tonight we did and what a mistake! We received nasty looks from all the local patrons and the bartender yelled at my husband for ordering red wine! If you want to feel uncomfortable and get treated poorly then this is the place for you. We usually love hanging with and talking to the locals out here as in the main area of town they’re so welcoming. But here at Marlena’s the locals were rude and wanted us out! Def a different vibe on the west lake area....
