Just finished dinner at Water's Edge and was very disappointed. It is not as good as it used to be at all. Firstly, I had made a reservation for 4:15 and arrived several minutes early to find that my table was assigned for inside and I was not given a choice of indoor or outdoor. It was a beautiful day today and I had planned all along to dine on the outdoor patio and had planned to order several drinks along with dinner. At no time during the reservation process was I told that reservations do not pertain to the outdoor patio. When I raised this point, I was told by a rather rude host that he was sure I was told this. I found this not only obnoxious but ironic since I had made my reservation with a female. The wait for the outdoor seating was 1.5 hours and of course defeated the purpose of making a reservation. I have never heard of preference being given to walk-ins over guests with reservations anywhere. I just checked the Web site for the restaurant and this apparently well known policy that guests are supposed to already know is not listed anywhere on the site. I have been coming here for years and have made reservations for the patio in the past so this must be new. My husband and I were celebrating some special accomplishments tonight and decided to stay and dine inside. He told the manager of the rude experience we had outside and we went on with our meal. I ordered a king cut prime rib that was a queen cut at best and was at least 50% fat. I had crab cakes as an appetizer and they were filled with shells obviously cheap brand frozen crab cakes I could make at home. My husband had a French onion soup that he describes as average. His dinner was pastabilities with lobster, artichoke hearts, catamata olives, and capellini which he said was delicious. I had ordered a Shirley temple which was obviously made with seltzer and had to be remade and they just added more grenadine because on the way out we heard one waiter tell another, we are out of ginger ale. The bill was $98.00 and not worth the price. We have dined here for years, throughout the year and are not just summer guests. The restaurant seems to have changed since the hotel next door was built and the quality of product and representation have drastically declined. Although we had a sweet and helpful waitress, we will not...
Read moreWe had a very warm welcome to the restaurant. The hosts were very kind and accommodating. We waited about 20 minutes for an outside table at 8 pm. Our server was pleasant and chatty. The view along the Mohawk River was lovely and there were very few mosquitos that evening.
The starters were fantastic. Crab cake with a great sauce. Prawns and scallops wrapped in bacon with horseradish sauce. We were very impressed. A good start!
But then we found the fatal flaw of the restaurant. The servers and the people that bring the food are two different sets of people - and the system, at least for us - did not work. If you want to call it a system.
When they brought our mains from the kitchen, our empty plates from the starters were still on the table. The staff did not clear the table and present us with clean silverware. We ate most of our main with our stacked dirty dishes on the corner of the table. The first time that we have ever experienced this.
And when he brought the food, he asked if we wanted anything else. I asked for a glass of wine which never materialized until I was pretty much done with the main - and after I had informed the server of the situation. At least the wine was complimentary.
Both of us ordered seafood for the main course. My partner ordered the hake stuffed with crab and lobster; I had the “seafood 410” plate. We were expecting a great main after a stunning starter, but we were sorely disappointed. My partner ordered the haddock stuffed with lobster and crab with asparagus.. There was no subtlety of flavours and there was no sauce. The fish and the stuffing was dry and rather tasteless. A man who usually finishes any meal was not able to finish this plate. I had the Seafood 410. Again, shockingly tasteless. There was supposed to be “lemon butter sauce,” but it lacked any taste and was not sufficient for the meal. The centre of the dish was the “jasmine rice cake,” which basically was what happens when you have a rice cooker failure. A mass of tasteless sticky rice that made up the majority of the presentation and the meal itself. Needless to say, a major disappointment.
Our initial enthusiasm waned. We forsook dessert and called it a night, For such a beautiful location, we were...
Read moreDon't waste your time or money! Ate lunch here today with another couple, and the service was abysmal. 30 minutes after arriving on time for our reserved table no one had stopped by to take any orders, so I got up and politely advised the hostess of the situation. She said she'd take care of it: 2 other tables were seated after we'd arrived and were already enjoying drinks and appetizers when, nearly an hour after we'd been seated, “Larry” came and apologized. He advised they were short-staffed (outside tables were approximately 20% occupied, inside was less, and there were at our count at least 10 service staff wandering the premises). We remained polite, and waited another 20 minutes for our drink order to arrive (2 glasses of wine, a glass of prosecco, and glass of sangria: time consuming?). “Larry” then asked for our food order, and as we were ordering he was clearly impatient, saying he was soooo busy (he had the nerve to say this after we had waited patiently for 1-1/2 hours already!). The food came 30-40 minutes later and it was forgettable (unimpressive turkey sandwich for $17, french toast that more an appetizer portion for $17, and two salads with salmon so overcooked you need a knife to cut it). We advised “Larry” about the dry salmon and he promised to tell the kitchen. Overall a very poor experience - there may have been a larger group in a back room, but that should be the restaurant"s problem, as opposed to other diners who chose to come there for meal. The previous iteration of this restaurant was fine - this one clearly is horrendous. If you should happen to be looking for someplace to share a meal and a visit with friends or family, don't let the nice "waters edge" location fool you: this place doesn't care about you or your needs as a customer, and you will be better served looking elsewhere.
Just saw other recent reviews and note this same complaint about service is pretty common - which tells you this is clearly a problem area that the owner is ignoring. ...
