Just awful. We were at Mel's because we were evacuated from NC because of the hurricane and wanted to enjoy breakfast with our nephew and his son. For starters, when we arrived we thought the menu was overpriced; even for coffee. We decided that we were going to order anyways because we had a funeral to attend and didn't really have the time to wander elsewhere. The wait wasn't too long altogether. Unfortunately, once we received our food my husband noticed that the ham in his omelette was absolutely disgusting. When he mentioned it to our waitress she said she had to bring it to the managers attention. Of course, the manager then had to come over and hear it from my husband for herself. The manager tried to persuade my husband that the cook in the kitchen had definitely cut up fresh ham that morning. My husband, whom had worked in a couple of kitchens for years knew that it was ham from the bottom of the pan and indeed not fresh. The manager had then went to the kitchen and spoke to the cook while we were told by a "fly on the wall" that she had tried the ham in the kitchen and told the cook herself that it was gross!! She came back and reiterated what she had said before about the ham being fresh and pleaded for my husband to choose something else on the menu (so they could still get our money). All in all, I would not recommend Mel's to anyone after that experience. How dare she lie directly to our face about something so vile that could make us...
Read moreMy husband and I went to Mel's for breakfast last Saturday. We were told to be seated and that she would bring over the menus. Five minutes later we got the menus. The waitress asked us if we would like coffee. She brought the first two cups. I took one sip and the coffee was luke warm at best. So naturally I told the waitress that our coffee was not hot. So she took our cups and refilled them with fresh luke warm coffee. Once again I told her our coffee is not hot. She looked at me like I was crazy and uttered..."It's fresh and it has to be hot because I just brewed it". Then she suggested that she would stick our cups in the microwave to heat them up. At this point we were ready to walk out the door. A couple of minutes later she delivered the microwave coffee...once again luke warm!!!! Then we saw her go to the coffee pot station and checking to see if the coffee was hot. Which of course it was not. We overheard the waitresses talking to each other that the coffee was not hot Friday night as well and that there was a problem with the hot plate on the machine. All she had to do was take a sip and she would have known it wasn't hot. I really wasn't in the mood for an argument with a waitress over luke warm coffee. As for the food, I ordered a poached egg which was watery. We will not...
Read moreOverall this was a mediocre experience. I have been here before and had great breakfast experiences, but this was definitively a diner food lunch.
Firstly, the carbonation was out in the soda fountain, which we only found out AFTER having ordered sodas. When brought to the servers attention they informed us that they knew about it and had the handyman on the way. If you know something will not be up to the expected standard please let people know ahead of time.
Secondly, the entrees were decent. Nothing to write home about, nothing truly heinous to complain about. Tomato slice looked funky on one of the burgers enough so someone who loves tomatoes pulled it off and wouldn't eat it. The Caesar Wrap was again okay. Personally I would have preferred a bit more sauce throughout instead of pooled all in one half.
I will say though, the fries and Onion rings were both on point. Some of the best I have had at any diner. So kudos on that. The server was overall attentive to the table needs and checked in regularly while managing a couple other tables.
4 stars for overall experiences at this location. If it had been the first, or only, time I went this would be a three star review as it was...
