Let me start by saying that my wife and I have been to the Half Moon (“HM”) numerous times since the restaurant’s opening, well over 15 times over the years and always had a rewarding experience. The views are unparalleled and the food and value were always great. But after not visiting the HM for about two years, I noticed a great change, and not in a good sense. Something sinister has happened to the prices, the quantity and the quality of food and experience, they have become inversely proportional – that is, the prices have gone up substantially and the quality and experience have gone down as has the portion size of the dishes. I am not including the view in the experience as that remains exceptional. I must also say, the service was very good and the food servers were very attentive and properly attired, which is more than can be said about the manager. I still believe that the manager of a restaurant in HM’s price range should be properly attired in a suit. It just projects an air of competence and elegance. Not in this case. A recently visit to HM with wife and friends was was a great disappointment. To me, the sign of hospitality in a restaurant, certainly one that is now calling itself Mediterranean, is the bread basket. No bread was forthcoming nor offered, nor were there olives or other starters, that is when I had a foreboding feeling that something was off. To begin with, scanning the menu the first that hit me was the hefty increase in prices. I know the Trump Tariffs are having an upward effect on prices overall and restaurants are included, but is all of the HM’s food stock imported? I hardly think so. The menu has become more Mediterranean, but I doubt all the ingredients are imported from Spain and Italy. I mean, $24 for a Pork Belly Chicharron? Come on, that is just deep-fried pork rinds, what a great margin for the House. The same with a $28 hamburger and $39 for a chicken paillard! I ordered a $26 Mediterranean salad that seemed so promising, consisting of lentil tabouleh, pepper, eggplant, chickpeas and romaine lettuce amongst other Mediterranean delicacies, and expected to be able to share it. What was presented was a “salad” the size of a soup bowl with no romaine and instead dominated by a bunch of sliced cabbage. Really? The kitchen was also not paying attention to details. One of my friends ordered the Seared Rare Tuna, $46 consisting of only four items-the tuna, orange, almond and watercress. Well…the kitchen forgot the watercress. Yes the watercress was promptly delivered after pointing out to the server that the item was missing but it was anything but a busy night, the oversight is inexcusable. Sometimes, if you have nothing good to say, it better not to say anything…but silence speaks volumes. I do not foresee returning to HM...
Read moreThey have the nerve to rush us during our NYE dinner and racially discriminate against us!
I've had 2 experiences at this restaurant and they were both terrible. I decided to give this place a second try after my first visit, however it was much worse service than the last. We had a reservation for dinner on New Years Eve and before we even got our food, the manager came over to let us know we were on a time limit to have our meal.
He made us aware of a party they were throwing later that night that we will need to vacate for. I was in disbelief they would really have the AUDACITY TO TIME US to have dinner. We paid $95 for each person so we expected to have a nice evening. But with this happening, our NYE was immediately ruined. We had to eat, and leave fast.
We were already feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable when the manager has the nerve to come by AGAIN while we are eating to remind us of the party happening soon and we have about 20 mins to leave!! I was shocked. We were so uncomfortable and displeased with the service. We also noticed he targeted tables that were people of color, no disruptions to any of the white people tables. We felt the immediate discrimination. This restaurant does not deserve your money! Take your business elsewhere.
On my other visit to this restaurant, our waiter had the nerve to approach us for leaving a 15% tip!!! It was a generous amount considering the mediocre service. Firstly, it took about 25 mins to get our order. Additionally, there were several times we needed things like napkins, refills, and utensils, and the staff was never on top of it. We had to hunt down someone for service. The man asking for a larger tip really aggrevated me but it was a celebration for a colleague so we didn't make a fuss. He did not get a bigger tip, the food was very bland, nothing special for the prices, and the atmosphere was very unwelcoming.
After these two incidents, I refuse to go back to this business and advise everyone I know to...
Read moreDined here for brunch and have some mixed feelings about it. The views are obviously beautiful, and the restaurant is certainly popular. Food was decent, but it is overpriced. I've dined at plenty of Westchester and Manhattan restaurants, so I am extremely familiar with the going rates. However, I was deterred from ordering majority of the appetizers; almost every single appetizer was the same price as an entree at other high-quality/upscale restaurants. Calamari is $28, and simple banana bread is $18. As other reviews have said, the food is good, but nothing crazy. Mezze platter is a great shareable dish; it was fresh and very tasty. My friend ordered steak cooked medium, and it was brought out well done. My steak was properly cooked but was on the bland side. The sides to our dishes overall were very good.
Service was friendly but slow and not very attentive. We had 2 waitresses, and they both disappeared for periods of time, forcing me to flag them down when we needed something.
What really turned us off was the hostess at the beginning. Upon arrival, a female hostess looked up at us, rolled her eyes, and had a look of annoyance. While walking up to her, we began telling her about our reservation. She literally did not respond, did not make eye contact with us, or even react. In the midst of this, a second woman came over and took over with handling our reservation. The other hostess continued to just stand there in silence, as if in her own world. I have never experienced such bizarre behavior by a hostess. She seemed to have this attitude with others as well.
Overall, I would definitely like to give this restaurant a second try. It has a wonderful atmosphere, beautiful views, and a very appealing menu. I do think a few things need improvement though, especially in terms of their...
