First thing I’ll mention is that I’m Guyanese and have never tried African (Nigerian) cuisine, however I’ve been curious based on social media. I decided to see where in Long Island, can I find an establishment that had good ratings, so I went with Mama Philo’s. Spent some time reading reviews and also decided to call for suggestions, based on what I leaned towards and spoke to a gentleman who took the time to explain variations of their Egusi. I opted for the Egusi with goat meat and pounded yam, in addition to Jollof rice and it was absolutely delicious! Wonderful flavor profile and definitely has me thinking about what I’ll try next! The only constructive feedback that I called and personally gave, after leading with the positive, was the fact that the portion size, isn’t what I thought it would be, as there were about 3-4 pieces of goat meat, primarily bone and fat, but there were still a few pieces of actual meat that allowed me to fully enjoy the protein portion of the meal. As I explained, I don’t mind paying a higher price for the quality, but just didn’t expect the amount given the price point. I will say, when I did personally express the one slight discontent, the gentleman did respectfully explain that the cost of the African ingredients are not locally sourced, in addition to the fact that I can agree with produce cost increasing exponentially, so I can respect their position, even if I’m not in agreement! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, despite the one negative. Great...
Read moreI got jollof w/veg nd goat meat nd that was the only thing that I got that was good, how ever it was not worth the money I spent for it or should I say i don't know what I spent for it, because I didn't get a receipt and they didn't have prices of the meals posted it was all blacked out. But what I do know is that I spent way over what I was suppose to spend by looking on the prices online. I spent $63 dollars and change and it was not worth the money for the small portions they give and I also go elusive which was decusting and pepper soup with goat which was so hot that i couldn't even eat it and the smell of it wasn't fresh that it turned my stomach. I will not be going back to this restaurant for the money I spent and not being able to see how much was the dishes that I brought and when I got the food they had no utensils or napkins in the bag when I spent $63 it was suppose to have those things in the bag. The food wasn't fresh at all I heard the microwave in the back, so I think they gave me old food and warmed it up, plus didn't feel food cooking when I came in the restaurant, which is a no for me. Won't be going back and I wish I could get my money back, wouldn't recomend this restaurant and If you go ask for the prices of the food and the size of the platter that it's going in. And also the pounded yam was very small for the money your spending. This was...
Read moreI ordered their (egusi with chicken and pounded yam) through Uber eats. In the notes I specifically said do not make it spicy. Egusi was extremely spicy. I feel like restaurants should not make food spicy because you don’t know people spice tolerance level. Only if it’s requested should it be spicy. Second there was two big pieces of chicken but barely any stew. Thirdly chicken was not seasoned it was just white(and it had a taste of chicken that was just boiled and thrown in a sauce). I tried to ignore the one, two bad reviews but I have had not a pleasant experience, especially as it being my first time ordering from this establishment and it’s definitely my last. I do not recommended this place at all!…….. F.Y.I MICHAEL TYSON IS NOT A SPAM ACCOUNT (responding to owners reply) he is my husband and I accidentally used his account to respond to your comment in regards to my review. I’ve attached the same picture that was uploaded from his google account. To say it’s a scam to get people to believe you is crazy. My point has been proven no one and I mean NO ONE SHOULD SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!! The picture shows that the chicken looks raw (that is the egusi on it that makes it look like something) it was not grilled neither seasoned like this owner...
