I was excited to see that there was a Jamaican restaurant opening in our neighborhood. The Jamaican food sign on Jericho did get me to come in and try the food. I ordered 2 rasta pasta with oxtail and a jerk chicken rasta pasta for dinner. The rasta pasta was good but if you're afraid of spicy food it may not be for you. Myself and the 2 other Jamaicans I bought food for did not enjoy the oxtail or the jerk chicken. We were disappointed, as we were happy to find Jamaican food near home for takeout. However, I would not consider this authentic Jamaican food. Caribbean food maybe, soul food maybe, but not Jamaican food sadly.
Editing to repond to owner's reply: I made the purchase several weeks ago and told you I was happy to find Jamaiacn food close by and that I would be back if the food was good. Also, I never compared your cooking to any other restaurant or even anyone else's cooking. As you can see, none was mentioned above. I just shared my opinion about the food. To answer your question, what makes Trinidadian or South American or even Korean oxtail different from Jamaican oxtail or any other oxtail??? Of course you're entitled to your own recipes. But I'm also entitled to my opinion of your food, which was advertised as Jamaican. I was excited to see Jamaican food nearby, but in my opinion, it missed the mark...that day at least. Now, the fact that your first response is to discredit by questioning whether I made a purchase says a lot. Especially when I bought 3 large meals. I may not have a business, and I'm not telling you how to run yours, but maybe think about your responses. I may not have liked your oxtail or jerk chicken, but maybe I would've liked your patties or whatever else you're selling. But after seeing this response, maybe we shouldn't try...
Read moreThis is a fairly new eatery and overall great dining experience. More like an American / Jamaican fusion eatery, but they do a good job. Notes: It's for pick-up/ takeout only (not set up for dining in) Great sorrel -- authentic I have tried several dishes, so I have pretty good thoughts/suggestions Ackee and saltfish coco bread buns are excellent! Empanadas need improvements (jerk pork is minced very finely and seems to be full of too much black pepper) (oxtail empanadas have a lot of peppers or bean skins, not very tasty while eating) Beef patties are good 👍🏼 Curried goat is good but could be more tender Oxtail is also very good and flavorful but needs more time cooking as well. Oxtail should not have to be bitten off the bone, but more so almost falling off. Almost needs to be prepared like how the stew chicken is done...tender. Coconut rice and peas, and cabbage are tasty! So are the southern yams...not too soft or mashy in consistency but very good. Jerk pork is awesome 👌🏾 Hot honey wings are also awesome, but you have to eat them hot...not great for a rewarm Brown stew chicken is also good, but within the large serving, there wasn't much chicken. A leg was served with a few pieces of thigh meat that was shredded. I'm leaving these comments as a third...
Read moreHusband and I finally had the pleasure of getting takeout from The Foood Spot yesterday. BEST DECISION EVER. It was the best food we've eaten stateside in ages. The curried goat, jerk pork, oxtail empanadas, chicken curry patty and sides were beyond authentic - we are used to these favorites when traveling in St. Maarten and The Foood Spot hit the mark by a long shot. My husband is a chef and reported all the meats and sides were fresh and professionally prepared to perfection. He even suspects the pastry dough was made in-house!
My only warning to prospective eaters, be ready for the heat! We love and have a tolerance for spice luckily, but if you have a spice limit, definitely consult with the staff when ordering on what you can handle! When they say spicy, they are talking true-Caribbean scotch bonnet/habanero pepper level spices!
Will 100% be back again and we look forward to trying more of the menu. So sorry we didn't get to take pictures - it all smelled and looked to good to wait another minute...
