The first thing you have to know is that I don't generally love Chinese food. It's usually a fight to get me to go out for Chinese, but my wife was so interested in trying Mogu, which recently opened near us in Garden City Park, that I caved. I'm so glad I did. I had the King Egg Roll with chicken as an appetizer, and it was a revelation. The flavors developed inside were rich and delicious, not the usual overabundance of cabbage, but REAL flavor through and through. Moreover, the crunch of the shell added texture like I've never had before in an egg roll, which is normally soggy or at least greasy. This was hands-down the best Chinese egg roll I've ever had, and I'll never go to Mogu without ordering it again! For my entree, I had the Shrimp Farm Fresh Sauté Infusion, and the name says it all. It was infused with flavor, not at all "fishy" and once again: not greasy or limp. The broccoli was perfectly cooked, crisp and fresh, and the shrimp had a wonderful, buttery taste and texture. Finally, the vegetable "fried" (not actually fried) rice was worth the couple of extra bucks, because it was delicious, and full of fresh onions and edamame.
If the meal blew me away--and it did--the service sealed the deal. Patti is like a ray of sunshine personified, and her enthusiasm for this healthy, unique food is completely earnest and sincere. John, who is one of the owner/managers, is a total gentleman, taking the time to bring us our food (how many managers do that?) and checking in on us towards the end of the meal, which Patti did as well. One gets the definite sense that these professionals actually eat the food they serve, and believe in its value, both nutritionally and in terms of flavor. Completely refreshing!
P.S., My wife had the air-fried dumplings and sesame chicken, and was equally delighted. And P.P.S., it deserves to be said: the place itself is beautifully designed and immaculately clean!
Without a doubt, we will be back to Mogu in Garden City Park...
Read moreUpon visiting this restaurant at the opening of its first location, I immediately anticipated its substantial success. Despite not being a frequent consumer of Chinese cuisine, curiosity prompted me to explore it with friends. After experiencing all locations from the original to the latest in Mineola, several compelling reasons drive my continued patronage:
The dishes are seasoned and salted appropriately, providing a healthy dining option that is even suitable for dietary needs such as patient meals. The pork is devoid of any unpleasant odors, ensuring a consistently satisfying dining experience. The absence of oil in the cooking process allows guests to enjoy fried foods without guilt. The immaculate kitchen environment assures customers of the restaurant's high hygiene standards. While the price may seem slightly high for individual diners, the portion sizes are generous enough to allow for leftovers to be taken home. Dining with two or more people offers exceptional value for money. Unlike many franchise restaurants where taste consistency can be an issue, this establishment maintains uniform flavors across all its locations, from the first to the fifth. Although the owner is Chinese, the influence of his Korean wife in the management brings a delightful Korean touch to dishes like chili oil sauce, hot sauce, and savory pancakes, enhancing the overall...
Read moreThe portion sizes are too small. We ordered take out for what we thought would feed four people comfortably and it wasn’t even close. The first person in our group to comment on the portion sizes is typically the person who eats the least and she couldn’t stop talking about how much money we spent and how little food we got. The sizes of the take out containers felt like it would be for leftovers from a dine-in meal or perhaps a lunch special portion, but not a dinner portion. The food itself wasn’t bad but everyone had one or two bites of everything and then we had to find something else to eat because it just wasn’t enough.
Another thing that bothered us was when we were placing the order, it prompted us to leave a tip and defaulted to a $15 tip and we had to physically change it to something more appropriate. I’m a very good tipper when it comes to sit down and delivery meals but to auto prompt a customer to tip $15 for takeout is inappropriate and they really need to just remove that from the interface.
This is probably a more appropriate meal for a solo diner who needs lunch during their work day and not a...
