they have no prices for toppings on the menu. be warned that they are in fact 5-6 $ each!! usually I would never be fooled by this ploy, as I always ask. unfortunately today we missed a train and were late to an event, plus we were with a friend so i didn't want to be too annoying on someone else's time.
also note that this was more than the $4 per topping listed on their (sit down) menu posted online. when i bright this up to the waiter, he have me a hard time and tried to say it was bc i didn't add tax. i pointed out I understood that. then he blamed it on the credit card surcharge. i said i understood that. finally he got the manager. the manager then took another 10 minutes to resolve the situation. he didn't know his own menu and had to get a copy to tell me how much a topping was. of course, he found out it wasn't there, and apologized profusely for that, as if it was a surprise, and said he would fix it. really, you didn't know what your own menu said before? i showed him the online menu. he tried to tell me i was looking at the wrong ones for delivery, until i showed him it said sit down. still undeterred, he went back to check the computer (waiting several more minutes of my time missing my daughter's party), and came back with a picture of his system showing pepperoni $5, mushrooms $6, and broccoli $6. so i paid 17$ of toppings on my $26 pizza they recommended (if not in a rush, we would have started with $21 margherita). despite all those misunderstandings and lack of printing on menus, there was no offer to discount or adjust the bill in any way.
so $43 subtotal for a 3 topping pizza. (btw their vegetable pizza is only 32, and i would much rather have had that.). with tax, cc surcharge, and tip, it was well over 50. for a pizza?? no thanks, i don't plan to go back ever and hope you don't go either. hope their management is satisfied getting a 1* review in exchange for robbing my...
Read moreI had never dined at Umberto’s nor had I ever been to New Hyde Park. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I can confidently say that Umberto’s exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked through the door the hosts greet me with smiles and kindness. The wait staff, specifically Antonio was friendly, professional, attentive, and enthusiastic. He clearly and and thoughtfully expressed what was available and frequently checked-in to ensure that we were satisfied with our food/drink choices.
What especially impressed me is when I expressed to Antonio that I couldn’t eat anything too acidic or disruptive to my digestive system. When I suggested perhaps a dish with olive oil instead of red sauce he paused, thought a moment, then suggested an alternate dish. It was delicious and exactly what I needed.
Though I did have my heart set on a dessert that I have previously ordered at restaurants I usually frequent, Antonio smiled and shared that an Olive oil cake is what was being offered that evening. I was reluctant but he again smiled and suggested I try it and if I didn’t like it, it would be removed from my bill. I LOVED THE OLIVE OIL CAKE!!! It is deliciously moist and like the man dish I ate for dinner, it took back to my visit to Italy years before.
I highly recommend Umberto’s if you want to sit down and eat or just want a quick slice of pizza or meal to-go.
The ambiance is very nice, the food is delicious, as is the service. Antonio truly made my visit there feel like I was part of the community regulars. He is definitely an asset to the team.
Fortunately I don’t have any photos, not because I couldn’t take them nor because I wasn’t inspired. Rather because I chose to be fully present with my cousins and...
Read moreUmberto's is such a classic Italian spot and I don't know why I haven't tried it until now! Had reservations made for a large group on a Monday night thinking that it probably didn't really need to be made, but it was actually packed when we arrived, so I'm glad we had it. This specific location has both a pizzeria and a restaurant, so you can really go just for the pizza or their full menu. In the beginning, I felt like we were being rushed to order..the staff came by 3 times in a span of like 10 minutes to try to get our order in. The food took a while to come out though. I love their bread basket! They had a mix of garlic knots and regular white bread. The garlic knots were so addicting. We, of course, had to start with some fried calamari, baked clams, and Grilled Portuguese Octopus. The fried calamari was crispy, simple and paired great with the sauces. Baked clams were good too; nothing outstanding but it was a good started. The octopus had a nice char to it and I liked the hummus, roasted potatoes, and chorizo that came with it. One of their specials for the night was a seafood pasta with a tomato sauce. There was a lot of stuff in. The seafood was decent, but the lobster meat was mushy and didn't taste fresh. I think the pizzettas were a favorite throughout the night. The pies are on the smaller side and meant to only serve 2, so we definitely ordered a lot. The Parma and Margherita options were so good! We also tried the Tortellini Bolognese; there was a lot going on in there, but it all tasted delicious together. I would recommend Umberto's to anyone looking for a good...
