We live 5 minutes from Dao so we've ordered from them many times in 5 years, and we've eaten there probably 10 times, probably 3 for hibachi.
The quality of the takeout food at this point is unfortunate. Their rolls are getting smaller to the point that now they can fit 3 rolls on one tray, where it used to be two.
We ordered a king crab roll last night that had completely fallen apart in the tray, the crab itself seemed a little past its prime and included crab shell in the roll. It was a travesty. I guess I'd say their standards have slipped and now I think it's very possibly hit and miss with their quality. I am not saying that lightly - it makes us sad to realize that one day we could well bring home food that we really shouldn't eat. The crab roll might fall into that category.
The udon no longer seems fresh and bright. It's saucy and cloying and I'm not feeling so great today from how salty it was. I decided today I won't order the udon anymore.
They have taken to lying (or miscalculating) sometimes how long an order will take to be ready, but only sometimes, so now we either show up and hang out for 15 or come late and the food has been sitting for a long time.
I realize you only become this knowledgeable after long periods, and you might have a perfectly fine time if you visit there.
I think the spectacle of hibachi makes up for many things, so I'd still recommend that if you're not picky. They do all the hibachi greatest hits - volcano, spinning egg, saki in the mouth, lots of chopping.
I think the service is pretty weird if you're just going for lunch. Often staff don't appear to understand English very well, so you feel like if you can get by without having to ask many questions, that would be best. But they must have to stand and watch the diners if they aren't moving food, because they situate themselves on the perimeter, pretending not to watch you eat, when that's exactly what they're doing. It feels strange if you let yourself think about it.
I don't know, I'm sad about this. I used to think how lucky we were to be so close to such a high quality place, and now I'm frustrated by their decline. 2.5 stars - somewhere between disliked & okay send more apt but I still have fond...
Read moreMy partner and I went here for lunch, although we were a little late and ended up having an early dinner. She got udon noodles, dumpling soup, and a side salad, I got two fusion sushi rolls and the avocado salad, and we shared an order of asparagus fries.
The fries were interesting. They're essentially tempura battered asparagus, but calling them asparagus fries is a smart way of marketing them, and definitely caught our eyes. Plus, they were good tempura.
The salads were pretty standard, but enjoyable. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, the dressing was tasty, and the portions were good for their size.
The udon noodles were quite nice. The noodles were cooked well, the sauce was delightful, and the chicken was tasty. Good portions as well.
The two sushi rolls I got were absolutely delicious. They were plated nicely, full of flavor, and the fish was fresh.
The dumpling soup actually came out last, but it was a pleasant surprise for my partner, as she said that the broth was a nice palate cleanser after the heavier noodle meal.
As for the establishment, it was good. There was adequate seating, the tables weren't too crowded, the soy sauce were in adorable ceramic pots, almost like a tiny tea pot. My one critique would be that the table was a little sticky when we sat down, but I saw the servers washing the tables immediately upon other people leaving, so I imagine it was due to whatever cleaning agent they were using, not spilled food.
Additionally, the server made the visit fantastic. I failed to get his name, but he was an incredibly jovial man, who cracked jokes as he waited. He also had conversations with the different guests, more in depth than simple small talk, and about a variety of topics. He just looked like he was having a blast and enjoying himself, which was very nice to see. And he ran my mask out to me when I left it in the booth, which was appreciated.
All in all, a lovely place to go. I'm interested in trying out their...
Read moreWe regularly eat beer and the food is always outstanding. Today 6/9/18 we had a reservation for 4 at 5:30. We actually arrived a bit early and were seated at the hibachi grill early. Off to a good start right? We thought so ... the cook was great the server was ok ... and the food was on point as always.. but something was off ... your staff seemed to be rushing us a bit... the salad and soup came out at the same time which never happens ... our appetizers were out with in minutes again they are never that fast ... but It really became apparent as soon as the cook finished cooking and platting our food. Not 5 minutes later was the waitress out asking it we needed To-go-boxes and then 2 minutes later out with our checks. Our meals “ love for two” came with desserts when we asked for our said desserts it was like we asked for the waitresses first born ... and then it was brought to us in To-go containers.. are you kidding me?? Between the 4 of of us we spent over $250 including tax and tip. Not to mention we come here regularly. I can’t believe this is how we were treated? We still had plates full of food, glasses full of drinks and were being pushed out the door. I cannot believe this is how you run your restaurant. I get it is a Saturday evening. But you take reservations and this is not your first weekend in business. It like you had your money and you were done with us. I’m sure the party of 6 that shared the hibachi grill with us felt the same way. We come there several times a year and our bill is always around the $250 mark, well I can tell you after today we will be second guessing coming back to your establishment. I still cannot get over the feeling of being dismissed and pretty much kicked out with our being able to enjoy my meal that I paid for. You were one of our favorite places to go on our couples dates but sadly...
