tl;dr - this place has some decent pizza, but nothing else is worth ordering and definitely don't sit down to eat here.
Four of us arrived for dinner during the nine days, and the place was swamped as to be expected for a dairy place at this time. Luckily, we did not have to wait particularly long before getting a seat. Our servers were nice and our order was taken in good time.
Unluckily for us, that was where the problems began and it seems clear the establishment is not up for such a busy dinner service. First, we were informed that the kitchen ran out of all pasta other than Penne, strange but alright. On the silly side, we were informed they were out of water pitchers and had to wait for one to be cleaned from another table.
More problematic, despite all of our orders being put in together, it took nearly 2 hours for everything to arrive. It didn't take 2 hours to cook our food, which would be terrible, but that individual dishes were brought out at random times. A main delivered to one person, then half an hour later an appetizer to another (or that person again), a duplicate of a dish we already received before another had been served, and so on. The waitstaff were apologetic about everything, but it is very unpleasant for anyone eating in a group.
As for the food itself, it all seemed to be hit or miss and do not live up to the descriptions on the menu. The Soups were edible, if not spectacular. The Fra Diavolo pasta, evidently from a box, was mixed with canned veggies and bland (supposedly spicy) watery sauce that is easily made better at home for a lot less than it cost us here. The Seafood Pescatori is also watered down butter noodles with casually cut chunks of fish (that seemed acceptably cooked). The Grilled Portobello Mushroom was so vinegary it was inedible and came steaming hot (which is normally a plus, were it not sitting on a salad).
For the few good items: The Salad Pizza was excellent, and we all wished we had only ordered pizza based on this alone (which from the look of it, they have a great style for and we noticed the chefs preparing the dough in back). The Mushroom Encroute (really a croissant, probably from a nearby bakery, covered in a Cream of Mushroom sauce, rather than what the name entails) was also delicious, if a dash salty.
Overall, with the many wonderful kosher establishments we have across NY, and we cannot believe that such a place, with this many problems in the kitchen and on the menu, exists at all and survived more...
Read moreThis is a very good restaurant. We had the whole wheat personal salad pizza with fete cheese. It was great. Not oily like a regular pizza, crisp crust and mounds of salad. 1 pie was enough for 2 of us. At $14, it was a bargain. The staff is very friendly and responsive. Why 4 stars? Because I also ordered Spinach with Cream. The description says "Sauteed spinach with garlic in cream sauce served over penne." It cost $17. Well, I got a container of ziti with some dots of green. I thought it was basil but I guess that was the spinach. So really, it's ziti with melted cheese and a sprinkle of spinach. At $17 it was outrageously overpriced and not as described. I will continue to order from Al Di La, they are good people and serve great food. I'll just shy away from the...
