Upon entering we detected an unpleasant odor of cat urine (or spraying). We decided to stay anyway since we were passing through the area and were hungry. The restaurant is right off Route 17 and easy to find with parking on the side of the building.

The tortilla chips were good and fresh but the salsa was disappointing- tasted like canned tomato sauce with onions and fresh cilantro added.

The main dishes were surprisingly good! My wife had shrimp fajitas and I had chicken tacos.

Her shrimp was well seasoned and perfectly cooked (not dry). She had the option of store bought or homemade corn tortillas. She opted for homemade and was pleased. (Why would anyone choose store bought when homemade was available?)

My chicken wasn’t overly seasoned but came with a generous sprinkling of fresh cilantro! The homemade green hot sauce had a decent bite but was flavorful. The rice and beans were very good - flavorful with overdoing anything (especially salt as many restaurants do). The guacamole did leave a bit to be desired as it contained mostly chopped onions and tomatoes with avocado in short supply.

Our server was extremely friendly, polite and pleasant without being syrupy.

By the end of our meal we still detected the unpleasant odor but it wasn’t as overwhelming as when we first entered.

Sure, the salsa and guacamole were a bit disappointing but the rest of the food was delicious! Overall we’re glad we found this restaurant and are willing to give it another try in the future as we pass by the area a number of...

Decided to try out this place since I was passing by this town. We were a large group so we called ahead to see if they could accommodate us and they said yes. It's not a big place and tbh it's not your typical restaurant atmosphere. They have a few boxes out. They have a table in the back that seems to be used when the family has their meals- since I saw 2 of their kids sitting there is what I could assume. The bathrooms are very poorly maintained but that serves more of a warning rather than a criticism. Other than that very friendly staff who make sure they are attending you right and give you what you ask for. All the food honestly tasted homemade. Like as if somebody was having you over for dinner and that's what their parents were cooking. A lot of places are guilty of giving you a sodium overload but this place didn't make you feel like you had to drink 3 pitchers of water after your meal. I ended up getting the steak tacos. The meat was tender and not too fatty. I could be wrong but the tortillas tasted and looked homemade which is always a plus. It was a bit of a wait for them too get our food out but we were...

First time we had a bad experience... the carnitas were undercooked... we never complaint but my sister couldn't even eat her tacos so we ask the waitress to replace them for another tacos, she went to the kitchen and a few minutes later the cook came out very rude and sure that the meat was cooked with "special salt" 🤔 and that was the reason they look pink 🤔 😅 .. but it wasn't just the color my cousin ordered carnitas too and he's a cook and he noticed the carnitas didn't taste right.. so besides the cook making my sister so uncomfortable they replace the tacos but we were charge for the carnitas tacos that they couldn't eat... we paid and leave and unfortunately we're not coming back and they might not care if we are coming back... but at least the owner should talk to the cook , she was very unprofessional and she's lucky that we are in food business too so we weren't mean or...

La Fondita Mexicana in Monticello, NY, is a gem worth discovering. My recent visit left me thoroughly impressed by the quality and authenticity of the food. If you go, you must try the guacamole—it is outstanding and sets the tone for a delightful dining experience. From the moment you step in, the welcoming ambiance and friendly staff make you feel at home. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes, each prepared with fresh ingredients and a perfect blend of flavors. I found the tacos to be a particular highlight, bursting with taste and presented beautifully. La Fondita Mexicana is a must-visit for anyone in the area. Whether you are a fan of Mexican cuisine or looking to try something new, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. Don't miss out on their guacamole—it's simply tremendous!

Update: Recently we returned to La Fondita. Although the food is really good, sadly the service is lacking. We waited over 15 minutes for a drink. I felt like we were ignored which is really a shame since we had a great first visit. I don't think we will return again. There are other places in the area with good food where you don't feel neglected. That is why I took two stars away. Omg this food is the real deal! We live out of state but we're here visiting and found this gem. The enchilada mole was one of the best things that I have ever eaten. The tacos are yummy and the Tres Leche cake is to die for. I had to get take out because I knew that I'd want more. Best of all, the people who work there are wonderful. The service and attention to detail is amazing! You gotta go!
