Sugar Bakery — Restaurant in Trenton

For three summers we have talked excitedly with our friends and family about wanting to try this bakery during a family vacation. Today, we finally had an opportunity, and I cannot express the true depth of my disappointment and dissatisfaction. It wasn’t the specific words or the paucity of them, it was the tone, body language and nonverbal communication of those behind the counter from the moment we entered that was so distasteful. We arrived to the business in a clean space and just a handful of customers at the counter, greeted by “you make orders here.” No offer of help, explanation of the baked goods or “good morning!” Cash only establishment, it’s well posted and there is an ATM, but we wanted to spend more than we had and asked if they’d take a check. More surliness and a curt “cash only” before the question could be finished. Again, no helpful offer of the ATM, friendly smile or effort to find a way to make customers feel welcome or comfortable. When we asked to clarify the price of some cupcakes, “3.95” (great prices!) was spat at us like we had insulted someone’s mother, at which we immediately turned and left the building. 7-10 words delivered with such expert deploy that I felt like I had done something wrong for a moment. I won’t be trying again, as we traveled down to Flexit Cafe and Bakery and had a great time, even a greeting from the owner who asked politely about our trip and shared her hospitality freely. Honestly, based on reviews, I was bewildered by the experience, but just cannot spend precious time with my family and hard earned dollars in an establishment that greets customers and visitors to Maine this way. I was so excited about this place. The sales person was friendly. The baked goods look delicious but that’s where it ends. We ordered 2 items to try. The Whoopie pie was lacking in filling. I’ve had several Maine Whoppie pies on my visits to Maine and all of them are basically the same but this one had the least amount of filling. It was a small amount that did not even go to the edges of the cake part. Although this can be seen prior to buying I purchased it figuring it may taste amazing. Nope. Next up was a beautiful S’mores cupcake. Chocolate cupcake with white butter cream piped on high with a cute marshmallow and small piece of milk chocolate. The toppings were great but that does not save the awful dry cupcake that crumbled as I took a bite. If you visit skip this place! What a terrible place! Stopped here to grab a treat and some coffee but before I ordered I had asked if there was a bathrom I could use. An employee who seemed like the owner, response was "we don't have public bathrooms" in a rude manner. Then the other employee at the counter helped us to navigate to the visitor center where we were "allowed" to use the bathroom. The attitudes were so rude in response to such a simple question. We decided not to get anything because of how they responded to me. As we were leaving the same employee who rudely said they didn't have public bathrooms then says to me "do not pee behind my building" as if I was going to do that. What nerve does she have?!
