As soon as we walked in we where greated by some of the most wonderful smelling aromas that food can produce. The sight of two gentleman peeling fresh snap peas was the next sight to great us, again the smell of fresh vegetables made ready to lay siege to my olfactory receptors. We where then guided to a booth to sit down and hot tea was immediately presented to us, which with the cold December air outside was oh so welcome. Cracking a few jokes a wonderful middle aged man asked us if we would need a few moments to peruse the menu, (which is extensive by the way). After ample discussion between our party we had decided to order a bunch of egg drop soup. This is where it all begins ladies and gentlemen. So help me Lord, hands down, no questions asked it was the best egg drop soup that I've ever had the privilege of putting into my body. (I don't even like egg drop soup so I was questionable about this decision.) Egg drop will definitely be on the map at this wonderful establishment in the future. Proceeding to eat roughly 3-5 bowls of soup each, we knew it was about time for the appetizers we had ordered earlier to make their entrance. Disappointment was not something easily found when the gyoza arrived, steaming and sizzling as if they could not wait to be wantonly consumed by my party and I. Laying out chopsticks and cracking a few more tactful jokes, we embarked upon the epic quest of; dipping the gyoza in that amazing gyoza sauce no one knows the name of. Finally, the time had come to bring them to our mouths and consume the delectable dumplings. Pure elation followed. Without fail, the "Wonderful House has achieved maximum satisfaction. Shortly afterwords the rice followed by the main course was revealed much to our delight. At last, what we've all been waiting for! Mongolian beef. (I won't bore you with the details of the dishes my compatriots ordered) Ladies and gentlemen, they've done it again. Easily have they crushed our expectations without remorse or sorrow, only to build them higher than expectations can be built. This could be a problem. Now, on this planet, out of all the Chinese places I've ever had the pleasure of eating at...are completely dead to me. Today was an amazing day, a day if discover, greatness, sieges and destruction. There now exists no scenario what so ever where I have Chinese food that can live up to the scrumptious morsels I have consumed today, to which no words can do justice. Now, ask yourself this: what have we learned today other than that the best Chinese food in all of colorado, no..all of the continental United States, is in this small mountain town? The answer is simple: sea foam green with salmon napkins to accent, is the new black.

We arrived in Trinidad and decided we didn’t want to eat at the normal fast food spot we usually go to on our way through. We wanted to eat Chinese. We mapped the locations and then read some reviews. We had a good laugh over many of the reviews mentioning the egg drop soup. It almost sounded as if someone had paid for all these reviews to mention this one item. So my sister-in-law was like, let’s go check it out. We stopped there last Friday and decided that we would be stopping back by on Sunday when we came back through from Albuquerque. Both times, the food was amazing. The people that were running it were friendly and very hospitable. I already have a request in to have my sister-in-law bring me some food from there the next time she stops in. We didn’t have a single thing we didn’t like, but out of all that we tried, I think the Honey Walnut Shrimp was my favorite.

We discovered Trinidad and Wonderful House back in July 2020 trying to escape from Louisiana heat for a while. We fell in love with both! I try to get Wonderful House whenever I visit. I always get the special foil wrapped chicken app. I love those chicken thighs, but I can't figure out the sauce it is in or how it gets so tender. They're just so yummy. My other favorite is the special dumplings. These are so flipping good! The dough is a little dense, which I love, and they are seared on one side to give some crunch. Filling is delicious. The dipping sauce is my fave. I could almost drink it! Ha! Ha! Portions are huge, too. For me, it's the best Chinese food that I have had outside of New York and San Francisco. My only complaint is that I don't get to eat there often enough! Ha! Ha!

Just had a very frustrating lunch at Wonderful House in Trinidad, Colorado. Wonderful House is not very wonderful! They did not have a gluten free menu and I was forced to order from a lunch combinations menu. I ordered the chicken and broccoli and requested it be made "steamed". There were sides that came with the dish, but I stated "I am gluten intolerant and I'd like those sides to go". They included hot and sour soup (contains soy sauce that has wheat), crab rangoon (made with wheat), egg roll (made with wheat), and fried rice (fried in soy sauce that contains wheat). I figured I could take them home and let a member of my family enjoy them for dinner. First the hot and sour soup comes out with crunchy noodles (made of wheat) and I said, "I asked for the soup to go please". Of course they ignored everything I said and even added noodles (smacking my head). So they return with a to go box and a small container with the soup and place it on the table. A few minutes later they come out with my chicken and broccoli with the egg roll and crab rangoon on the plate and crumbs of fried crap all over my steamed chicken and broccoli. I said again, "I'm gluten intolerant, I don't want to get sick! I cannot have these items touching my steamed chicken and broccoli, please please please fix this!" (Everyone in the restaurant is hearing my upset). So the waiter takes the dish to the back and he returns in a flash. He has the egg roll and crab rangoon in a box and he places the dish of chicken and broccoli back in front of me. I see there is crumbs still all over it. I'm so frustrated and upset at this point, yet starving, I pick carefully around the contaminated area, knowing that I will pay the consequences after! The look on my face was clearly distressed and the waiter returns and said "is everything okay?" I replied, "no my food is still contaminated, I will get sick if I eat this". He said, "i'll make you a new one!" I said "good, thank you." He comes back with a foul look on his face, with the chicken and broccoli and the chicken looks the same as the first chicken with some brown substance all over it. I thought to myself, never in my life has "steamed" chicken ever been brown, what is on my chicken?!" I picked carefully around this large mound of pieces of chicken that were discolored, ate most of the broccoli. I feel a lump in my throat and a lot of sinus discharge from my gluten intolerance. I know it was contaminated, but what is that on...

We traveled over 2 hrs to have Christmas dinner here. Hostess was abrupt, no smile - we felt like strangers who had stayed too long...before we were seated!

Waiter gave absolute MINIMUM service; never checked once to see if we were okay or needed ANYTHING "else". Answered questions - when we called to him; few words - then left quickly. As we looked around during our dinner - most customers treated in same MINIMAL manner though maybe not so abruptly. FYI; we were well-dressed, clean, middle-class, educated seniors with a positive attitude.

Food was average. Hot and Sour soup different than ANY OTHER we've ever eaten over the years. Dried noodles in soup that are usually served with Chow Mein. No choice for customer to use or not - plus had meat in soup.

Main course was brought almost immediately - before we had a chance to get halfway though appetizer or soup; so some of our food was left to get cold.

Check was brought before we were half finished with platter. As previously stated...felt like we had 'overstayed our welcome' or maybe had forgotten to shower...

Pros; place was clean, place settings - pretty, decor - nice.

But, when people go OUT to eat, customer service is EVERYTHING! As such, we left feeling tense and stressed!

WE WILL NOT RETURN !!

Danielle...
