Conveniently located at the corner of Square Lake (19 mile) and Rochester Road, this long-time dining establishment delivers the goods. They used to be known as Square Lake Diner but about 5 years ago they changed their name to Shine Cafe and eliminated dinner-dining hours as they now are open only until 3pm. They have the same food, same look inside and for the most part, the same personnel, they just took away dinner time.
The prices are high but the quality of the food matches the price so you don't feel ripped-off, LOL. The coffee is strong, bold, smooth and delicious. During the weekend mornings you might have a small wait to be seated but it is worth the wait.
There is plenty of parking outside in this large shopping lot. Nearby is a dance studio and a dry cleaners. If you are in need of a handicap parking spot be aware that they have two handicap spots right near the door BUT they are super-slim spots leaving very little room to exit or enter your vehicle.
The cooks and servers are efficient, knowledgeable and kind. The inside ambiance is perfect for relaxing. There are plenty of booths and tables, lots of lighting and pretty artwork to admire. Sorry, no TV with snore-snore-sports to ignore.
The menu has a wide-assortment of items to choose from, pick anything, as you will not be disappointed. I've been dining here for over a decade and the food is always fresh, served at the right temperature and served on-time. If you are in the mood for a little day-drinking, you have found the right place as they serve cocktails, wine and other assorted...
Read moreI am severely disappointed with the experience I was brought to. We were brought to a table immediately. The one we sat at was crooked with no way to adjust it since it was engraved in the wall. The service was awful, they were rude and inattentive. The coffee was old and tasted awful, but still hot enough from the warmer to burn when the waitress recklessly spilled a ton both on my companion and the table. Then the waitress walks off like nothing happened, not taking any sort of responsibility as to what happened. The food was mediocre, I could get better english muffins from our local grocery store. The meat was dry, and the fried potatoes were overly wet. The waitress also gave us attitude everytime we wanted something. If we wanted coffee she would scold after giving us attitude as if making a fresh batch of coffee, that mind you we paid for, was some forbidden task. Then when we were sitting down attempting to enjoy our drinks before we left, the waitress rips out our receipt with the tip on it from under our hands aggressively because they had to leave. They're lucky that tip was even there to begin with. I hope they do better in the future because I will not be...
Read moreThe food is tasty and portions are generous, but the care and attention to detail could be improved. A vegetarian in my group ordered an omelette with veggies, and halfway through it, found that there were a few chunks of meat in the omelette. Not sure if this was a result of the cooks not cleaning the grill or letting orders commingle or what. When we alerted the server, they apologized, but didn’t offer to comp even half or the order or anything, just asked if we wanted the kitchen to remake it. My companion said yes just because the restaurant didn’t seem inclined to make it up any other way. The makeup omelette, when taken home and eaten later (cold, as a leftover), was inferior to the first omelette minus the meat—the veggies weren’t cooked through well, indicating that the kitchen had made this one in a rush just because they had to make it up.
That unfortunate incident is lowering our opinion of a spot that otherwise seemed pretty decent.
Prices are a little higher than other local...
