Exquisite classic French cuisine just south of Short Pump. You’ll not find a better French spot if you’re looking for the genuine experience. Top notch food and service in a 20 year established restaurant.
TLDR: Best escargot in RVA. Classic French cuisine with award winning service in a slightly dated but ultimately permeable and secluded atmosphere. Fantastic wine list and beautifully mixed cocktails. 2 appetizers, 1 cocktail, 1 bottle of $130 wine (half off on Sundays), 2 entrees, 2 desserts all for $300 with a 20%+ tip. Worth it!
Food: The chef has the French style down! We enjoyed escargot and tuna tartare as appetizers. The snails were incredibly good. Butter, garlic, and rosemary compliments the protein while a beautiful olive oil flavor persists afterwards. Tuna was the exact opposite with fresh cool tuna delicately seasoned to focus on the fish. Both were exemplary. My spouse love the whole sole fish filleted table side. Lovely garlic butter sauce compliments the fish. I enjoyed the lamb. It was prepared medium rare and was very tasteful. I should have salted it (personal preference) to further make the glaze pop.
Drinks: Easily a top three whiskey sour in RVA. They know what they are doing. We really liked the bottle of Pinot noir we got. More so as it was half off (any bottle under 150) on Sundays.
Service: They recently won best service in RVA. Not only do they understand the full menu and it’s intricacies but they cared for the table and your experience at all time. Every crumb was collected, drinks were topped at all times, they listened to your input and questions, and even folded/presented placements when you left for the restroom. The rest of the wine is preventing me from recalling the charming gentleman that cared for us. Thank you!
Dessert: Cheesecake was super creamy and had everything a cheesecake could ask. Enjoyed the lava cake. Which, if you’re a fan of this style of dessert you will not be willing to share!
Atmosphere: Only area to nit pick. Eat table feels secluded and intimate which is great! It’s still a drop ceiling, the bathroom wallpaper is aging, and the chairs are a little old. All signs of a 20year old restaurant. But everything was super clean, presented well, and goes unnoticed. Much better than similar restaurants which cramp you together and volume is out of hand.
What a hidden gem that’s been here for so long. Will...
Read moreWell thought out menu, a good selection of entrees. I would give a five stars for the Lamb Chops, it was the best that I ever had. I thought they could made more effort on plating, salads and entrees could use a better presentation. It really didn’t matter too much as long as the food is food. I was really excited to try the Avocado & Brie Salad (sliced hass avocado lightly dressed and topped with broiled brie cheese and dried cranberries. Tossed in our house vinaigrette.) I was very disappointed with the salad, to say the least. Brie was dried and cold. Avocado and Brie were paired on a piece toast, all three did not go well together when it was cold. I could barely taste the dressing, salad was very bland. We loved the Tuna Tartare! The presentation, flavor, and freshness made this dish a perfect appetizer. The ahi tuna was very good quality tuna, combined with olive oil, lemon, caper, and shallot; each bite melted in my mouth with a satisfying smile. I normally rate five stars for restaurants with decent food, but felt that the standards should be higher for the fine dining restaurant. Service can be improved. We waited over 20 minutes (or could be longer) for our salads after quickly devoured the Tuna Tartare. Also waited quite awhile with dirty plates sitting in front of us before Ryan stopped by our table again. We watched the hostess cleaned and changed five table cloth around us. I might sound negative, but we really did have a great experience. Really enjoyed our dinner, other than the salad. Chez Max is a great restaurant, I can see ourselves become a regular here. I am certain every entree will exceed your...
Read moreI came here after asking Siri for a french restaurant near me to get creme brulee. Myself and 2 friends were very under dressed but despite that was still serviced professionally. You're greeted at entrance by the aroma of flowers. The interior has a sort of dark cherry wood feel to it. The prices were great for the quality and service. (The creme brulee was 7.50) I only came here for desert, but overall the atmosphere was very appealing. They had some drinks but it wasn't something I was particularly interested in at the moment, but from what I saw it was limited compared to what you'd expect. For future reference, I would dress appropriately, not that it was a big deal; but at the same time, it's one of those places you don't want to walk into looking like you just came back from "clubbin". I'm not referring to seals. Our waiter was an adult male, polite, with a sharp appearance contrary to what I had expected. (Some college or high school kid dying to make eye contact and call me 'sweety' or something along those lines). 8/10 would bang again. This would be a good place to go to take someone on a date that isn't an Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, or "another chain restaurant". I see someone else made mention of the behavior of other guests and all I can say is "that happens everywhere". Your circumstances are not that of a typical experience and that kind of thing can...
