A J's Cafe & Grill — Restaurant in Turlock

Service and food came out fast. Looked good on the plate. I had the quarter back special, eggs, spinach, bacon, onions and cheese with country potatoes. The eggs were good, however the potatoes had been parboiled., which I understand is necessary to cook quickly. However they were barely grilled for the order. After we returned home both my spouse and I were sick. I can attribute it to the meal we just consumed. I don’t think they clean the grill that they prepare food on very often. We used to like dining here, however after this episode we won’t return. Too bad, as there are limited options for breakfast in turlock. That why we have to travel out of town. This is an update of my previous review. We decided to give AJ’s another chance for breakfast. We dined here on Feb. 21 and this time we weren’t disappointed and we both felt fine the rest of the day. I ordered the Portugese skillet;, chopped linguica, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, potatoes. The portion was large and prepared well( the potatoes were grilled). My husband had pancakes and they were light and fluffy. Server was friendly and we received our coffee and meal quickly. I was in Turlock and had some time before my appt. I texted a friend who lives in Turlock and gave me great suggestions for dinner in the past and she was spot-on. I got lost finding A J's even with an app giving me directions. I got there around 9am, inside was half full - a good sign! After being seated, I was asked what I would like to drink. When my water was deliivered the wait staff had their whole hand on the top of the cup - eww. Ya, I could have asked for a straw blah, blah, blah. I looked at the menu - lots to choose from. I was eyeing the Portugese Platter until my eyes scrolled down and saw the Swedish Deluxe Combo. The Swedish Deluxe Combo has 2 Swedish cakes, two eggs and two bacon (I opted for links) and asked for a side of spuds. Less than 10 minutes later my food arrived. I moved my two links and sunny side up eggs onto the spuds and left the two Swedish cakes by themselves on the plate. Let me tell you, those spuds were good! The only reason 1 star is because it won't allow zero stars or that's what the cook would have received today. Ordered a veggie omelette and it was nothing more than a plate of veggies with the eggs just laying on top not wrapped like an omelette should be, and looking around the restaurant seen others with omelettes that actually looked like it should. The standards for the quality is horrible here. Asked for a remake and waitress wanted to argue about it, and when it finally was remade the cook used the same veggies and quality still was not good. Very disappointed how much this place has gone down hill since Chuck passed away. He would never allow his restaurant to be run by these poor standards and quality off food.
