Belacan Grill in Tustin is a hidden gem for Malaysian cuisine. We ordered a variety of dishes and were impressed by the quality and authenticity of the flavors overall.
We started with the chicken and beef satay, and they were excellent—grilled to perfection, juicy, and served with flavorful dipping sauces that were rich, nutty, and had just the right hint of spice. The roti with curry sauce was another great appetizer.
The Char Kway Teow was good, though a bit milder in flavor than expected. While the noodles had a nice texture and were cooked well, we would’ve liked a bit more depth or spice. Still, it made for a satisfying dish overall.
The highlight of the meal was Belacan Fried Rice—absolutely packed with umami and perfectly stir-fried with a mix of shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. The shrimp paste flavor was bold but well-balanced, making it one of the best fried rice dishes we’ve had in a while.
We finished with the Coconut Curry Laksa Noodle Soup, and it was incredible. The broth was rich, creamy, and full of spice and depth. Combined with noodles, tofu, and chicken, it was hearty, comforting, and left us craving more.
Service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed but welcoming. If you're looking to explore Malaysian flavors or are already a fan, Belacan Grill is well worth the visit. We’ll definitely be back—especially for that laksa...
Read moreWe wanted to try Zov's Bistro and found this restaurant next to it and packed of people. I smelled all the delicious food and was surprised that yelp never recommended this restaurant in Tustin.
We ended up changing our mind to give it a try since I have never tried Malaysia cuisine and love trying something new.
We ordered calamari, crab rangoon, and a cup of hot and sour soup as appetizers. It was the best fried calamari we ever had, super flavorful and crispy good quality calamari. It was not over breaded or double fried like a lot of fried calamari from other restaurants. Also the best fresh hot and sour soup I have ever had, the peppers the egg and the vinegar just exactly the right portion. The rangoons were basic with fake crab, but a good portion at a great price.
For entrees, we ordered Beef Rendang and the seafood clay pot curry with coconut rice & chiken rice. You can choose normal steam rice, brown rice, coconut rice and chicken rice. OMG, the coconut rice is like a dessert, smell delicious and it is such a great taste. Seafood clay pot is sooooooo good with fish, scallop, tofu, bunch of veggies and eggplant all in a spicy and savory broth. The beef rendang is soft, flavorful, and great quality. The curry spices used perfectly complimented the meat without overpowering it.
It you want to try extremely good Malaysia food!! Definitely give this...
Read moreThe wait is usually quite long for dinner. Suggest to line up virtually using Yelp Waitlist before going to the restaurant during dinner time - this might save you of waiting outside 30+ mins.
Service was slow when we went there for dinner. After bringing out the dishes, they “forgot” us until we asked for the bill. We wished the service was better.
Food reviews: Roti Canai - Meh. Don’t think it was made in house. Curry dip is okay. You can skip this appetizer.
Curry Puff - Meh. Made in house but small. You will be eating mostly crust and not much filling. The filling was just potatoes. You can skip this appetizer.
Char Kway Teow - 9.5/10 Yummy. This dish is authentic and the best dish tonight. Noodles charred slightly to give it the perfect taste and texture. Ingredients were eggs, shrimp, tender chicken pieces, and perfect amount of soy bean sprouts. Would have been better with slightly more noodles.
Ampang Yong Tofu - 8/10 Good. We chose the mild curry version. It came with generous amounts of tofu stuffed with fish paste. Also inside the curry were okra, bell peppers, onions and chili. You might opt for clear broth if you don’t want the heavier coconut curry sauce.
We didn’t get the chance to try the desert, but they have the typical Malaysian Chendol, Ice Kacang, and Fried Banana.
