Wow, I had been to a few Chubby Cattle places before (X Pot, Wagyu Factory Lake Forest, Niku X) and all have impressed me. This however, was the best experience and selection for it's price point.
The ambiance and vibes are immaculate. I'm a big fan of restaurant interior design and the inside is beautiful. Dark vibes with unique centerpieces. It's extremely spacious inside with booth seating that adds to the privacy of your dinner party, but they also have private rooms.
Our server Jhune was extremely kind, helpful, and attentive. The wait staff immediately cleared any empty plates on our table and fulfilled every request we made so quickly.
The pots are flush with the table and are quite deep so the splashing of any broth is contained well.
Now the stars of the show: the meat
They have a gorgeous layout that is highly efficient and clean. The food items are in stacks of plates that you can grab and take to your table rather than a communal grabbing area with shared tongs. Each section of a communal area comes with its own tongs too like the fish tofu, mushroom, and fish ball area. I do wish they had hand sanitizer on each table though since grabbing plates of the meat can mean your hands are in contact with raw meat, but the restroom was very close to our table so I could easily get up and wash my hands. They had so many different cuts of meat to choose from and all of them were delicious and of great quality!
There are also already prepared dishes such as salmon, unagi, and tuna nigiri - I'm going to be honest these were pretty mid, but the unagi was decent. They also had lobster gyoza, kimchi dumplings, and octopus dumplings - which is such a unique hot item and they were quite good! There were other hot sides I did not get a chance to try, but looked good as well.
By the rice dispenser (YES A RICE DISPENSER which drops a perfect serving of rice from this mysterious machine next to the ice cream machine), they also have japanese curry and taiwanese braised pork belly. Like excuse me? These are insane options and were so so good!
Halfway through our meal I heard a bell ringing and saw everyone lining up by the drink station and I realized they were serving king crab! Now this crab is in the shell, kind of skinny, and is cooked in chinese spices which is good if you like that! i personally would have been find with the crab being plain and easier to open. The shells were soft and hard to crack open so scissors would have really been helpful here, but the flavor is good if you like that flavor profile!
Its hard to miss, but they have szechuan style skewers above the egg tarts! They had beef, lamb, pork belly, and yakitori. All of them were absolutely delicious and on par with Gui in Irvine. Their sizzling dishes were okay, the steak was but the salmon was not to my liking.
Now the egg tarts. My god. These were some of the best egg tarts I have had in OC. Hong Kong style egg tarts with the flakiest crust and a creamy, not too eggy, rich interior. Pro tip: put vanilla ice cream on top to cool it down because it's REALLY hot, but also its so delicious - a little egg tarts a la mode!
The sweet potato cheese I wasnt a huge fan of but the EGG TARTS! I went back TWICE for those!
Overall everything was such a unique and fun experience and there's so much it's hard to try it all. We will definitely be coming back with friends and it is so worth the price! We had an amazing time and think anyone...
Read moreNEVER BACK!!!!!! Felt Targeted and Discriminated Against Our party of 8 (split into two tables: 6 + 2) came here for lunch. Two of us are members, which according to the restaurantâs policy should give the $6 off /each(regular $49.99, member $43.99).
What Happened: We clearly told the server that the membership was registered under a spouseâs name and even asked if needed to see our marriage certificate. The server demanded to see an ID, which we provided â only to then be told they âsometimes randomly check membership eligibilityâ and strongly implied that we were using someone elseâs membership.
We were the only ones in the entire restaurant asked to show ID. We are all Chinese and were speaking Chinese during the meal, which makes it very hard not to suspect we were being targeted because of our ethnicity.
The entire interaction was humiliating and completely ruined our lunch experience. The manager did apologize and sent out some complimentary food, but frankly â who cares about free food at an all-you-can-eat hotpot place when youâve already been made to feel like a criminal?
Billing Issues: We told them directly: if they couldnât verify the membership, we were willing to pay full price, If they recognized mistakes and were willing to apologize().
At checkout, our table of six was charged an 18% service fee without any prior notice. To make matters worse, the server still insisted we add a minimum of 2% extra tips on top.
We ended up leaving $0.99 as a tip â a deliberate protest to make sure the restaurant understands how unacceptable their service was.
Recommendations: Be transparent: Post a clear notice (on your website and in the restaurant) about the automatic 18% service charge for parties of 5 or more.
Train your staff: Learn to verify membership politely and without humiliating guests. Stop targeting and stereotyping customers.
Respect your customers: People are here to enjoy a meal, not to be accused, interrogated, or treated like theyâre trying to cheat the system.
Intuitive Experienceďź This was by far the worst lunch experience weâve ever had in the U.S. The service felt arrogant, discriminatory, and completely unprofessional. No amount of free food can make up for being disrespected. We will NEVER be returning â and we will make sure others know what happened here.
Legal Concern: Most tellingly, when we offered to pay full price if they could not verify the membership, they chose to charge us full price rather than actually verify the membershipâs authenticity â proving this was never about policy enforcement, but about suspicion and humiliation.
Furthermore, this restaurant does not sell alcohol â so on what legal basis are they demanding to check guestsâ IDs? This feels invasive, unnecessary, and discriminatory when no age-restricted products are involved.
Under California SB 478 and SB 1524, it is illegal to add a mandatory service fee that was not clearly disclosed on the menu or price displayďźsee the picture of their website's menuďź. I am prepared to file complaints with the California Attorney Generalâs Office, the California Department of Consumer Affairs, and the local District Attorneyâs Consumer...
Read moreIf you've haven't been to other Chubby Group locations the Wagyu Factory is the ultimate place to try a little bit of everything! While shabu is their main menu, the open buffet bar offers skewers, braised pork, curry, dumplings even sushi?? Our favorite was their egg tart - the caramelized custard was spot on, crust was very flakey, crust could a bit thicker imo for more structure- they also have ice cream, baked sweet potato brulee(?) swiss rolls. They also have an ipad with different offerings - this is where you can order higher grade wagyu.
They have your classic soda fountain as well , plus fruit juice refreshers. Forgot to ask- but didnt see any tea options , would be nice to have next time.
Hot pot items - at open buffet ayce sliced meat bar, mostly wagyu on stackable tray-dish (wish they had gloves or protective sheet to grab the dishes)
-taro, pumpkin squash and wintermelon on a trio platter
-assorted mushie and veggies in a pot
variety of fish/meat balls (personally wouldve liked to see quail eggs and fish ball w roe but honestly fair pricing for what theyre offering) crab sticks, bean curd
-variety of fresh- dry noodle options
I had the tom yum soup base - it was good, i wouldve liked it a bit more sour so the flavor has more depth. Seems like a favorite was the wagyu brisket tomato soup
Overall for a soft opening we had a great time!! I could see lots of potential with this spot and would be excited to try new seasonal items in the future. Never had anything less than 5 star service at any Chubby locations - s/o to our server Jhune for taking...
