My boyfriend and I have been here twice; first in February, and then last night. The first time was great, no problems, responsive service, and plenty of sushi on the belt. I was excited to go back, especially for our anniversary, but last night was horrible.
We showed up at 7:45 pm and saw on the tablet outside that it said 25-40 minute wait. We signed up and sat outside with a few other groups. They don't allow you to wait inside (there's no space), it was about 45-50 degrees and very windy (about 20 mph), they have heaters on the patio but would not turn them on for the 10 or so of us who were waiting outside. We watched as group after group walked out of the restaurant, but no one came to call a group in. At 8:07 I got a text saying my turn was coming up and to check in with the host, which we did. We noticed there were screens on the wall that show which tables are open (green numbers) or need assistance (flashing red). Two tables sat open for a good 15 minutes before they came out to call, for the 3rd time, a party that was clearly not there. 8:27 I get a text saying I'm next. 10 minutes later the host comes out and calls AGAIN for the party that was not there, so my boyfriend asked again about our table, considering it had been almost 30 minutes since I got the text saying my turn was "coming up". The host had to "go check" if there were tables...while holding the tablet clearly showing multiple open tables right in front of us. At this point the groups waiting were just me and my boyfriend and a group of 4. When we were finally seated at 8:45, an hour after we got there and 15 minutes before they close, we were seated at a booth for 4, directly next to 3 open seats at the sushi bar. The group of 4 wasn't seated for another 5 or so minutes at a different booth, when we all could've been seated at the same time (which should've been about 5 minutes after the tables were open and showed up on the screen, not 20). I've worked in the restaurant industry, why on earth are you a) not releasing a table when a party is clearly not there b) leaving tables open when you have a waitlist and c) seating parties at tables larger than they need??
We had specifically come here instead of somewhere else for our anniversary because they're having a 3-week event with certain types of sushi. Only after we've waited an hour, we're seated, and it's nearly 9 when most restaurants close do they let us know that they are out of everything on the event menu except the dessert. More horrible practice, if you have a special event going on, you know people are coming looking for it, you tell the people waiting in the cold if you are out of it so they can make a decision before it's too late and they're trapped in your restaurant.
The ONLY time an employee came to us was when I pressed the 'call' button to ask about the event menu. Our table number flashed red on the screen for 7 minutes while the employees were giggling and chatting in a group directly behind us before someone finally looked up and came over to say "it's all gone" with an attitude like "why are you even asking me". I know this is a very automated place, the robot (best employee in the restaurant) brings your drinks, the belts bring your food, but the last time we were here someone checked on us at least twice throughout the meal, and they weren't anywhere near as rude/ignorant. Additionally, after we finished eating, I was walking to the restroom and an employee came out of the kitchen, nearly running into me, and forced himself ahead of me into the only open bathroom. Just the cherry on top 😙🤌.
Sucks because the food IS really good and it feels like better prices + selection than Wasabi in the mall, but the service is just horrific, I doubt I'm coming back...
Read moreApril 2024 Another kura sushi. The food quality is the same as other locations. That is, we come here for the experience and prizes, not the food. To make matters worse, they don't have the Hokkaido Milk Tart, which I believe is the best item on the Kura Sushi menu. Though the seared salmon is pretty good. The soft shelled crab and the snow crab are both terrible. Note the rice for the nigiri is not packed very well and falls apart easily.
The service is a bit lacking compared to other places. I called them to see if they were open on Easter Sunday, and the call rung for 5 minutes before it was automatically dropped. In person, the staff are brisk and assume you've eaten there before. I saw some groups obviously new to Kura Sushi trying to figure things out on their own.
HOW TO EAT AT A KURA SUSHI: First, the setup: mounted above your table/seat is a tablet where you can order drinks, appetizers, udon, ramen, dessert, and yes, sushi. Right below that is a one way conveyor belt where the kitchen directly delivers food that you order from the tablet to you. You can order sushi from the tablet if you don't want to wait for the communal conveyor belt. Soups come with a lid clipped onto the bowl and a soup spoon placed in a small bowl. Below that one way conveyor belt is the communal conveyor belt that runs through the whole restaurant. If you see something you want on the conveyor belt when it reaches your seat, just grab it off the belt. DO NOT put stuff back on the conveyor belt. That's disgusting and rude.
Continuing the How To. On the table below the sushi belt are napkins, soy sauce, a box of ginger slices, and the plate slot! The plates you can insert are the blue sushi plates. Note that this includes sushi that you ordered from the tablet. Anything priced the same as sushi (here it's $3.55), comes with a plate you can insert. For every 5 plates you insert, your tablet will show a short video detailing the adventures of Mutenmaru as he defeats villains! Help him by inserting plates! For every 15 plates you insert, you get a free random prize! Note if your party of 2+ are sitting at the bar, you should insert your plates into 1 slot to get the prizes.
You can also buy certain prizes from the tablet (not the rare items). They cost the same as a sushi plate. They are delivered from the kitchen on a plate, and you insert that plate into the slot.
We first came here as a party of 6. The staff gave us the option of squeezing into 1 booth or giving us 2 booths that were across the aisle from each other. Of course we chose 2 booths (putting our plates into 1 slot). There was a group behind us that also got 2 booths.
Parking here is a free large parking lot for the shopping center. Note that while the spots in front of Kura are usually full, there is plenty of parking in front of the Best Buy.
There are two unisex bathrooms in the back. They were decently clean and dry. Most interesting, they have the toilets with warmed seats and that spray water. The controls are mounted on the wall next to the toilet.
Overall, the location is more convenient for me than the DC location, but otherwise the food quality is the same (a little less because no tarts) and the service...
Read moreMy dining experience here at the Tyson's location was frustrating. This is our first at this restaurant. We decided to try this sushi restaurant because it was different. Drove from Lorton, VA to come here. We checked in electronically and were informed that it will be a 50-80 min wait. That's fine and decided to browse at nearby stores to pass the time. When we were texted that our turn to be seated was near, we went back to the restaurant. When I asked how much longer we have to wait, we were informed that we will have to wait a little longer because they have to seat a large party despite us checking in before this group. This group took up two booths. When I asked why, it was because the mother in the group said that they have a diabetic child in the group and need to eat soon. I asked how is that a priority. The mom could take the child to a less crowded restaurant if the child needs to eat right away. The manager, Keon James, explained that he did not want to create a situation with that family and being considered inconsiderate of their situation. I said that by doing that, he created another situation with me because now I have to wait longer to be seated. It is also disrespectful to the other customers who were waiting before that group. What is the point of the waiting list if they are not going to honor it?! The manager said that he made the decision because another booth, which he will seat is in, will open up soon. Once the table is clean, he will seat us. Well, when the booth was ready, they gave it to other customers that checked in before us. So now the manager decided to honor the waiting list. Mind you that this is our first time dining in this restaurant and drove from Lorton. We waited for 1 hour and 35 minutes before we were seated. We could have been seated earlier if not for the large group the manager decided to seat before us. To make matters worse, the manager didn't even compensate us for the inconvenience. He didn't even apologize for the inconvenience, how we are doing and how he can make our dining experience more pleasant. The owner of this restaurant needs to train Mr. James better as a manager because he made some terrible decisions that night. If we didn't already invest a lot of time waiting and hungry, we would have left. The food was okay and the service was okay, too. We had to press the Call button twice to get a server to get a refill. I don't think we'll be coming back to this place and will NOT recommend it my friends and family. I hope this was just an isolated incident because I certainly don't want to go to a restaurant with...
