Union City, which I've know since grammar school in the 1960s, contains some Latin American restaurants that are real gems, and this is one of them. The city's population is around 85% native Spanish speaking, and it's food culture reflects this percentage. If New York gourmands secretly nurse a resentment of New York restaurants for being noisy, trendy, rushed, overpriced, and having a habit of treating diners like sardines, downscale Union City is an unspoiled haven of restaurants that are unpretentious, congenial, friendly (English speakers more than welcome), affordable, and that serve delicious food. I was walking last Saturday to a Cuban place I know when I came across Pizzara's and decided to give it a try. I've never noticed it before, really, and can't recall seeing a Uruguayan restaurant at all. The decor has a simple charm: clocks and Uruguayan license plates. The young waitress was friendly and perfectly bilingual. It was 2 p.m. so I ordered from a lunch menu. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the dish, but it seems to have been a platter version of the national signature dish, chivito: a bed of french fries over which was lain a thin grilled beef steak, a bacon strip, a slice of ham folded in two and stuffed with mozzarella, with a sunnyside egg on top. It came with a lettuce and tomato salad and a potato salad with olive. It was very delicious and very filling, the lightest part being the bill afterward. I almost don't want to write about the restaurants of Union City (and West New York next door) for fear they'll be discovered and ruined. but no matter what happens, these places aren't going to change for a long time, and the Hudson River seems to erase all curiosity from the minds of New Yorkers who might just wonder what...
Read moreI know the owner of this place he's an awesome guy and out of respect for him I'll keep this professional and unbiased. 1-The food tastes good and it's well priced. 2- The family sized platters are The Best for families and for individuals to eat from multiple times. Almost as if made for those slow days when you don't want to cook yet you feel compelled to binge eat and nap all day after work. 3- The decor on the inside is interesting and somewhat of a conversation starter if you have an interest in different cultures. It's definitely worth dining at the locale and you will definitely enjoy your meal. They've made the adequate accomodations to maintain the safety standards that we have to abide by during this pandemic in order to stay healthy and safe, in other words, you can find inside or outside and feel just as safe as we all did before Covid-19 decimated our peaceful routines. To whomever it may interest and concern, it's a nice, cute, cosy and well priced place to eat. I didn't add any pictures because whenever I've visited I'm either talking to the owner or ordering...
Read moreI have been ordering from this place for years and going there since they opened, today I tried to place an order for a plate of gnocchi and a slice of pizza delivered to my house like I have previously done. After getting the third degree about my address, that’s just five blocks away, I was then told that a single slice of pizza cannot be delivered to my house even though I’m paying for a $12 dish on top of that slice of pizza. Oh, and although their menu and website say they deliver, they don’t. So the guy tells me “I’ll bring it to you but I don’t step foot in buildings, your gonna have to go outside” okay, I don’t live in a building. What surprised me the most was the attitude from the guy over the phone, I asked if he was the owner and to my surprise he answered YES! I was absolutely taken back from the service, like I previously stated I’ve been going here for years. To witness the owner behave and speak in such a manner is safe to say I will not...
