Machine Shed is a wonderful restaurant dedicated to the American Farmer. Farming is everyone’s bread and butter. #machineshedrestaurant #urbandale #iowa

Dined at the Machine Shed for the first time in many years on this past Saturday. Joe was our waiter, and took care of us from start to finish. When you dine at Machine Shed, come hungry, or be prepared to take home leftovers (like we did.) I say this, because you certainly will want to try one of their GREAT desserts after you main meal! I chose the 2-piece chicken dinner with veggie and mashed potatoes sides (shown), and my wife got he chicken pot pie. Each meal came with coleslaw and cottage cheese also, as well as dinner rolls, so now you're getting the idea what I said about being hungry / leftovers. Both meals were fantastic. As usual, I try to pick out something about the meal that sets it aside from other main course (in this case fried chicken / mashed potatoes, and I'd say that Machine Shed hits the mark with crisp crust on the chicken. Also, the potatoes aren't "whipped," they look, and have the texture that they are actually mashed (like I prefer.) My wife said her pot pie stayed hot in the dish provided (HUGE plus) and had no shortage of chicken. Now, for the desserts. Seriously, we could have skipped dessert but then figured what the heck. She took home about 1/3 her pot pie and her entire dinner roll, I took home about 1/2 my veggies, a chicken thigh, and my dinner roll. So, I ordered the cherry pie with ice cream, and she ordered apple. Folks, we travel, and you know this if you follow us. These were two of the best pieces of pie we have ever had. Period. And, good news ... you can buy an entire pie and take it home! So, 5 stars Machine Shed. And, your restrooms were even pretty tidy, considering this was a VERY busy Saturday noon hour!

Another favorite when traveling through. Good old fashion home cooking, but on a larger scale. You can order things such as pot roast, and unlike many other places, it will taste like grandma made it, and that it had been in the slow cooker since the night before. I’ve never been disappointed with a meal here. Today, I opted for something very different. Instead of brisket, or ribs, or a stuffed pork chop, or even the pot roast, I tried their special, which was cod, potatoes and salad bar for $12.99. The 3 pieces of fish were a good amount and same with the potatoes and gravy. But, they also brought a big roll and 2 pieces of pumpkin bread out to start. From the salad bar, you’ll see I chose cottage cheese, a fruit mix, and a salad consisting of hard boiled egg, fresh grated cheese, hard build egg, real bacon bits, and what appeared to be home made croutons. I was hungry, and wasn’t able to make a 2nd salad bar round by the time I was done, so I didn’t get to try the drunkin apples on the salad bar, which are always good as well. I also took a picture from the shop, as kind of like a Cracker Barrel, they have an entry shop full of fun things to look at and buy. This is a great place to eat.

We were super excited to try the Machine Shed. Heard great things about it, lots of great reviews. Waitress was fantastic. It started to get busy while we were there but she handled it like a pro. I asked if the fried chicken was any good and she said if they serve old chicken it's not good but fresh was really good. I asked her to check and she said she would make sure I got fresh fried chicken. Our dinner rolls came out and they were in the dry side so we didn't ask for more than the 2 we received. Best friend ordered the BBQ combo platter. When the food arrived, the mashed potatoes on both plates were cold and contained large lumps of undercooked potatoes in it. My coleslaw was probably the best coleslaw I ever had. Chicken was luke warm but tasted great. The corn that came with was bland. I won't even salt or pepper my food, I'm a very bland eater and it was even too bland for me. Best friend had me try her food. They use a ton of BBQ sauce so if you like a normal or light amount, you should probably specify. I suspect it is used to drown out the dryness. The combo came with 3 meats, all very dry. Chicken almost tasted boiled. The baked beans weren't very tasty and the meat thrown in was dry. We ended up leaving over half our meals and didn't take a to go box. We will definitely not be back. They serve drinks in small Mason like jars and I would suggest they upgrade to the larger Mason sized ones with handles. The waitress has to refill a million times because they aren't large and the place is too busy for that. Do the waiter/waitresses a favor and buy larger jars, they will love that. Much less running around. Positives : clean establishment. Friendly staff. Fried chicken, although not hot, was tasty. Best coleslaw ever. Good sized portions. Very nice atmosphere. Negatives: super dry rolls, the 3 meats were dry on the BBQ combo, the meat was dry in the beans. Beans weren't great and corn was bland. The food was an extreme disappointment.

Reading others reviews it seems you either love or hate the place. I wish I could have tried it before the change everyone keeps talking about. I can't say much that hasn't already been said. Decent sized portions, nice atmosphere, excellent service (between lunch and dinner on a weekday). Shout out to Ramzi, he seemed a little nervous, but he didn't miss a beat. The Salad Bar was kept open for my companion, and it came with a bowl of Chili that that he couldn't stop talking about (of course he's not a quiet man). I really enjoyed the beef liver and onions. It was pan fried with just a little breading on it. I would say the onions could have been grilled a little longer, but that's just a matter of preference. The garlic mashed potatoes with the skin still in them were delicious, and the green beans tasted fresh. The price I thought was a little high, but I'm not from Iowa and have no place local to compare them to. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll look forward to trying their pretzel sticks with beer cheese fondue, chili, and possibly even a cinnamon roll.

Dined here during Saturday Lunch Buffet. Four people $102 plus two small Pepsi (3.99ea)...wow. So, I feel compelled to leave this review as it was the worst breakfast/lunch buffet ever. It has been several years since we last dined there and it was good. Between the four of us we had the scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, some salad, a waffle thing with blueberries, taco casserole?, powder biscuit? and flour gravy?, and omelets. The omelets were good but the rest was not, scrambled eggs tasted strange as some of the other cooked items. The worst was the salad which my wife had and said it was good but when we got home it went right through her. I also got a gut ache a couple hours later and lasted several hours. My parents said they were fine with no gut issues. So, it must have been only a few different items that were contaminated? All in all I did expect a way better buffet both in quality of items, more selection and better food handling/preparation. In short, there are now four customers that will never return.
