New Ownership since 2020. My family of 4 used to order takeout prior and we were not aware of the ownership change. It's been 2 years since we order from Chef Chen. Anyways....
I typically don't like leaving negative, 1-star reviews, but here I am. My rating for the quality of food. Today the 22nd March, I ordered Singapore Rice Noodles, General Chicken, and Szechuan Beef (they no longer have crispy beef due to new ownership).
The Singapore Rice Noodles tasted bland and truly flavorless; the chef/cook should consider adding more curry powder, spices, and meat. In the old ownership, there used to be flavorful with meat, fried eggs, and vegetables. In the current new ownership, it's basically "bleh" with 95% rice noodles (vermicelli). The rice noodles also have a slight off-putting smell...as if it was old and not fresh.
Szechuan Beef. Over salted with seldom any beef. It was about 70% vegetables and 30% beef. The beef are thick and not thinly (uniformly) sliced.
General Chicken. This is the only redeeming meal during this order. It's mediocre. Wah Shine and Dragon Palace—both here in Vacaville—does exceptional General Chicken.
With that said, my family is borderline not going to be ordering any takeout from Chef Chen. If we do in the future and unless the Singapore Rice Noodles and Szechuan Beef undergoes recipe changes, these two will not be candidates for takeout order.
Speaking of Singapore Rice Noodles, Dragon Palace has the best Singapore Rice Noodles in Vacaville. Despite the lacklustre quality of food, Brian who took my order was polite and professional and speedy at processing my takeout order.
Who knows? I always tell people to make up their own decisions. Give it a try and don't be turned off by my review. The new ownership change and food might be good for you. If not, please use constructive criticism to let the business owner know in hopes of improving the quality...
Read moreAs a household of 6 we have a lot of mouths to feed with a variety of tastebuds. We are currently on quarantine and have to stay indoors, so I suggested we get delivery Chinese food. I have never had Chef Chen’s before but after checking out Yelp, Google and Grubhub reviews and pictures (yes, pictures are important) I decided that the family would agree with the options available. I made the mistake of ordering hungry and by the wide eyed looks from the kids I may have ordered excessively. I justified my actions by claiming it was also supposed to be for everyone’s lunch tomorrow... so where do I start? I don’t really want to own up to the amount I ordered but here it goes: -Pot Stickers: 1 each was not enough! Will order more next time -Honey Chicken: 6 out of 6 agreed it was delicious -Green Bean Chicken: 3 out 3 agreed is was scrumptious -Beef w/ Broccoli: 6 out of 6 agreed its the best -Orange Chicken: 6 out of 6 said it was hecka good -Lemon Chicken: 5 out of 6 said it was tasty (1 child said it was “too lemony”) -Sweet and Sour Chicken: 4 out of 4 said they liked it -Honey Walnut Prawns- 5 out of 5 were fighting over them -Pork Fried Rice AND Pork Chow Mein... it’s all gone so no explanation necessary...6 out of 6 are FULL! The delivery time was on point with what I was quoted and I had no issues with anything. I will be feeding the family Chef Chen’s next time we are craving Chinese food and the time...
Read moreWe used to dine here regularly and order to go or delivery but after this last experience NEVER again!!! All of our food was EXTREMELY SALTY!!! I mean how do you mess up Chow mein and fried rice?? My husband had to drive all the way back and when he arrived and told them it was too salty, they told him it wasn't! They then proceeded to tell him that nobody else complained about the food. After arguing with him, they said they would remake the food without salt. At this point my husband just wanted a refund for the dishes that were inedible (I'm talking like those prank videos you see where people put a scoop of salt on the spoon with the food they want someone to taste). They were hesitant and told him that they are losing out on food costs!!! Ever since management changed, this place has gone down hill with service and the food quality that they produce. I would suggest going to China House in downtown vacaville, Bao 88(more for dim sum but they have bomb chow mein and fried rice), or Noodle or Rice. The price point is pretty much the same but you will be getting way better quality and service!...
