Uptown manages to do what few restaurants accomplish… Uptown is a destination! Seldom is Uptown slow or lifeless. The busyness of this cafe is its lifeblood.
They have a great coffee product, but there is probably better places for coffee in Valpo. Get a drip coffee and have coffee for hours. Their coffee is good and I’ve had some of the other espresso base drinks which are pretty good as well. The baristas are always fast and eager to help get your drink, right. There is a refreshing lack of pretension with Uptown café.
They have a great selection of tea if you’re not a coffee drinker.
Stay long enough and have lunch. I’ve had breakfast and lunch there and have never been disappointed.
The value of uptown is a social experience that feels like the kind of place people just go. Atmosphere is the best aspect of Uptown. Lively and fun and happening— on its own without pretentious gimmicks. When you come to uptown, you will be surrounded by college students older folks, and middle-age folks.
A couple of critiques: many of the outlets on the north wall don’t have power, one of them having it visible burn marks. There are several plugs in the floor some of them work some of them don’t.

There are countless ‘small touches’ that make being here feel like home. Firstly, their vast herbal tea selection allows anyone (tea lover or not) to find their personal blend. Secondly, they have a water jug for anyone to use and they have a selection of board games for everyone to use. It’s very clean and has many options of seating from couch lounging to community table meeting. MENU- Their baked oatmeal is ooey gooey and amazing. Great for a cold day! (and I totally borrowed their recipe to try at home) Their lentil soup and other soups always hit the spot on a cold day too. The sandwiches and potato salad are the perfect lunch and it’s so delicious. We also love their lox bagel. very fresh and they don’t skip on the capers! Their beverage selection ranges from seasonal lattes to boba tea. I’m not sure the origin of their coffee but it is wonderful. Also- we really appreciate their milk selection; any mood your in they have the milk that will work for...
Read moreBeen going to this café for years: before and after I went vegan. They have plenty of options on their menu, which I explain below. The menu has maybe changed once in the 2.5 years I've been vegan, but where this café excels is in its variety of signatures drinks, rotating soups, and fresh, day-made pastries. They source their coffee from roasters in NWI - one of which used to work at Uptown. The staff is welcoming and accommodating for people of all walks of life. If there's something on the menu that isn't quite what you want, they'll work with you on adjusting ingredients. You can order sandwich and soup btw! Favorite café in all of NWI.
