So…where to start on this joint. I don’t think I have a better statement than “the best authentic bbq in VB”….and in a 500 mile radius. I’m from TX, I grew up with a lot of bbq, worked at bbq pit in Dallas for years…..this is “IT”. 100% no holds barred authentic TX bbq, for those not aware we are talking brisket here. Simple, done exceptionally right. I’m a local foodie, I’ve been to the local joints and big box joints, and there is no comparison. The food was excellent, the place was clean, the staff were just great and wholesome people. So for the few people claiming to be from TX saying it’s just “OK” or saying worse…I’d be wary of their reviews.
The brisket is outstanding. Melt in your mouth/fork tender, still had structure in the slice for the bend and that smoke ring just yelled across the room. The flavor was simply brisket, with a nice “clean” smoke. The smoke wasn’t heavy and overpowering, it was tastefully done. The bark/rub was light, however; very flavorful. It was simple, the smoke and rub didn’t overpower the brisket. Everything was done simply right. It was so tender and juicy. I’m glad they serve it the only and right way…..plain, and not swimming in bbq sauce. That’s just a sacrilegious thing to do, serving brisket in a puddle of sauce. Shame on the rest of the area restaurants that do this. Also a bbq sandwich was ordered and to my delight it also came properly prepared….on thick sliced buttered TX toast, plain thick and flavorful slabs of ol’ brisket, raw onions, and pickles. Wonderful!! Besides a huge shout out to the pit master/chef, the baker is highly dangerous. That banana pudding cookie is outstanding! The sweet potato/cornbread cookie/biscuit will turn the devil himself into a saint.
Highly recommended...
Read moreOh man I can’t wait to go back! I was craving bbq and we decided to try out A Taste of Texas. What a find! This is the best bbq in the whole region. We ordered the 2-4 people family bundle. Smoked turkey, sliced brisket, half a rack of ribs, bacon mac n cheese, beans and greens. We also bought sweet potato rolls and a small side of slaw. Woo! The flavor of everything was amazing. The only reason I even used the sauces was just to try them. The meats and sides were so flavorful on their own, they did not need anything. Our fussy 2-year-old didn’t even complain once we got a bite of the smoked turkey in his mouth. He started leaning over the table trying to get at the rest. This food is outstanding. The smoked turkey was moist and full of flavor; the brisket was falling apart; the ribs had a wonderful light glaze on it; the greens were made right with nice large cuts and bits of bacon; the mac n cheese had bits of bacon in it as well and the beans were sweet and tasty. The sweet potato rolls were a really nice surprise. A fine dessert. The big take away for me was the slaw. I love cole slaw. This was a perfect mix of cream and vinegar base with nice crunchy cabbage. Next time I am getting a large container of it. Seeing how we bought the 2-4 people bundle, we had plenty of left overs. Good food is one thing. But when you salivate over cold leftovers, you know it’s something special. Even cold, this food was excellent. We will definitely return to A...
Read moreAfter having this on my list for a while I finally went. It looks like your typical takeout spot but there's indoor seating available. Unfortunately they had run out of a lot of sides, so I couldn't get what I really wanted but that's not their fault. I had the pitmaster deluxe sandwich and a side of collard greens. The sandwich was big, lots of pulled pork, brisket, and a sausage. The pulled pork and sausage were pretty good. For a Texas Inspired BBQ spot, the brisket was not anything special. It was underseasoned and kinda dry, but still managed to be tender. I'll have to try it again one day because it could have been an off day. The pulled pork was nice and had a sweet flavor compared to the Carolina style most are used to. The collard greens were bad. They didn't wash them well so they were gritty and they didn't taste like anything. They also didn't drain the liquid, so it was just in a pool of water. Lastly, there was a bit of heat to them but no real seasoning. They're extremely stingy on sauce and napkins. I'm kinda torn between a 3 and 4... I wish I could give a half star. If I go again and try the brisket, then I'll be able to confirm my thoughts. It's by no means bad and I'd recommend people go, but don't expect your taste buds to...
