Lengthy but good response! So me and my wife have gotten food from this place twice now and I have some strong pros and some not so strong cons, just some things in my opinion should be cleaned up so stay with me. First off, the customer service was great! My wife went in there once and said the owners seem nice and very hospitable. She put in an order online today and we had to get it canceled and the gentleman was kind enough to cancel it so we could redo our order. Now as for the food I have to say overall it’s great! The empanadas have been perfectly cooked both times we’ve gotten them. They really remind me of New Yorican food and they do their arroz con gandules right! Just a heads up, if y’all ever go to a place and the arroz is bad the place is trash, just forget about the rest. Unfortunately since I don’t eat pork or seafood I can’t try out the pernil (some call it lechong) or the carne frita and the maduros are not duro which is a good thing haha. However I have tried the chicken and this is where the cons start. While the grilled chicken does have good flavor, it is a bit dry and kind of salty. I love salt but I even found myself saying it’s a bit much. I do think they can remedy the dryness of the chicken by getting thighs instead of breast. If those were thighs then dios de bendiga because it’s needed haha naw I’m just kidding, but farill. The chicken filling to their empanadas is good but it is also a bit salty for me while I think their beef [empanada] is good. The worst thing on the menu to me is the potato salad. I think that’s a straight up miss and they should redo the recipe for that. It actually needs salt, seasonings and probably something acidic/sweet like sweet relish along with some peppers, celery and onions chopped small to give it some pop and texture. But the potatoes were cooked well and they don’t overdo it on the mayo, at least when I tried it. This is a bit nit picky, but I would like the guava y queso empanada (some call it pastelitos) to be on top of each other rather than next to each other. It’s not great getting the sweetness of the guava and then a bite of cream cheese unevenly. The flan is BOMB, but the empanadas were a bit sweet. Of course my wife loved them though haha. As a half black half rican myself, I really want to see this place succeed. This is the first place I’ve had good Rican food from out here and I’ve been here 13 YEARS! I think they just gotta clean a couple of things up. Overall I give them a solid 7.5-8/10. Mi gente, come try it out and judge for yourself! Or if you’re not mi gente that’s cool too try it out...

I got the pollo asado combo with yellow rice and pigeon peas, plus fried sweet plantains for my husband. For me? I had the pernil combo, same sides—and yes, it hit every note.
Then came the guava and cheese empanada… and my golly, somebody’s abuela really showed them how it’s done right. Flaky, sweet, rich—pure perfection.
Everything was flavorful, the portions were solid for the price, and the wait? Barely a blink. No complaints here.
Best believe I’m heading back tomorrow to try something new—and yes, I’m grabbing more of those guava empanadas… and adding the apple ones to the mix too.
Do yourself a favor—go. You’ll...
Read moreBorn and raised in the BX and I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve walked into a Puerto Rican restaurant in the Hampton roads area and felt like I was back home. The environment was nice, the food was fresh and very much seasoned. Most people struggle with seasoning the inside of the pernil well, not here they definitely didn’t miss! Loved it! Also the pastelito de Guayaba was 🔥🔥🔥 the portions are big as well. I ate and had food left over for dinner. Overall my experience was great, the owners are down to earth. It was worth the drive from ocean view to Va beach! Which says a lot being that I live down the road from De Rican Chef and still chose to take the ride....
