Guads Mexican Restaurant is located in the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center. I've passed the place countless times over the years, but never made the time to come in until recently. It is located near Trader Joe's and Ulta Beauty (where JoAnn Fabrics used to be located). There is ample parking in the area, but some of the parking spots are pretty skinny. Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic can be busy at times, especially around the Trader Joe's. My visit to Guads Mexican Restaurant was on October 21, 2020.
As noted above, I've passed this place several times over the years, but never made a visit there until this year. I'm not sure why I haven't been in sooner. What brought us to the area was due to an appointment my mom had at the DMV to have her license renewed.
We got there around 4:30 pm that day and it was empty at the time. This is not unusual for us to go somewhere before places get busy, especially given the current environment we are in. When you first come in, there is hand sanitizer available. Both staff and guests are required to wear masks, but guests can remove their masks while seated at the table.
We were immediately greeted and got to a table. Our server asked us what we wanted to drink and gave us menus to look over. We were also given chips and salsas as well, which is typical for this type of restaurant. This place offers Pepsi products. After he came back with our drinks, we were pretty much ready to order. The first part of the order was cheese dip. I ended up going with the Mexican Pizza with chicken as the protein for my entrée. My mom went with the Taco Loco with shrimp.
Our server did great giving us time to indulge in the cheese dip before the entrées came out. It was about ten minutes later when the food came out. The Mexican Pizza with chicken was really good. It may look small when looking at photos, but it packs a good amount of food. I was full and then some when I was done. My mom liked the Taco Loco with shrimp as well (taco salad). Likewise, it may look small in photos, but there's quite a bit in a small shell so to speak. Our server did check up on us a few times to make sure all was good and they did great with keeping up on drink refills too.
Overall, food and service were great at this location from this first visit. Food and service are the biggest factors when it comes to returning to a restaurant in the future. When I am in this area again in the future around lunch or dinner time, I will definitely consider coming back here again and again. So, if you are looking for a Mexican restaurant in this area, this is definitely a great place worth...
Read moreMy absolute favorite American style mexican food restraunt . My family has been going there for decades, even before the local chain was called Guads, is good friends with owners of two of the Hampton Roads locations, and knows all the waiters/waitresses at this establishment. I have been going ever since I was little and love it there. Even though the inside of the restraunt has definently changed overtime, it is still just as charming and the food and service is always amazing and top-notch. Ive never had or seen anyone have a single problem, bad experience, or not spectacular food. Tip to anyone planning on visiting: its a great restraunt for the whole family; however, like in hopefully all restraunts you go to, DO NOT let your child run around the restraunt due to the experienced plate balancing waiters/tresses, steps, carts, and obviously the fact that it is a restraunt. I highly recommend this place and I have never been to a single other american style mexican food restraunt that can compare or will be as great. Love to Chilo, Marvin, and all the...
Read moreOverpriced restaurant with canned beans and the food is not worth it. Charging $8 for a kids meal while using dinosaur shaped Tyson chicken nuggets when the menu says chicken fingers and fries. I failed to mention in my last review (on top of tipping himself $26 by adding 18% gratuity to our bill just me and my kids ages 3,9,13,17) that my kids got nachos and I asked for a side of jalapenos. Instead of bringing one side with enough jalapenos the guy brought two sides of freshly cut jalapenos with about 7 pieces on each. Charged us $3 for each. I've NEVER been charged for a side of sliced jalapenos at a Mexican restaurant. I'm from San Antonio Texas where they have the best Mexican food everywhere you turn. So I've been to thousands. I've been to a Mexican restaurant in Miami Florida and although their restaurants are expensive I was not charged for a side of jalapenos. I get jalapenos at every Mexican restaurant I go to. Sometimes I ask for an extra side of salsa as well and have never been...
