Although I am more of a wine drinker, pairing various types with food, dinner at The Wasserhund this week was the first time I experienced pairing BEER with food! Not being much of a beer drinker, our waitress, Megan, chose a sampler of four of Wasserhund's most popular beers. She also recommended an appetizer plate of hot pretzel bites, pepperoni chips, and sliced pepperoni stuffed inside pretzel dough with three different dipping sauces. She also brought two pizzas: The Wasserhund and The Philly Cheese Steak. The selections of beer included The Puppy Powder, German Shepherweizen (GS), The Haywire Husky, and The Black Forest Lager (BFL). To begin with, I tasted each of the sample beers and chose the BFL as an immediate favorite! The rich smooth flavor of this beer makes it one I would have no problem drinking a lot of! Secondly, I began pairing the other beers with food. With the Wasserhund pizza, I discovered the citrus flavor of the Puppy Powder brought out the taste of the pizza and visa-versa. The GS brought out the flavors in the Philly Cheese Steak pizza. I drank the BFL with the appetizers and sipped on the coffee flavored Haywire beer on its own (delicioso). It was so exciting for me to experience pairing craft beer with food made specifically for this beer! The rich mingle of flavors has me wanting to go back again and again. Of course, topping the amazing meal off with cat-nip, the Wasserhund's signature desert, completed an eating and drinking experience I will never forget! Thank you Wasserhund family, Aaron and Christine Holley, and your amazing staff, for producing my Virginia Beach new favorite eatery. With love from Priscilla, resident of...
Read moreI stopped into Wasserhund last Friday night for a co-worker shindig. This was my first visit here in quite some time and man was the place packed. Our crew which was a probably about 20 people in all pretty much took up most of table that's immediately in front of the bar and we also had some overflow at the bar to.
Like I said the place was packed and the folks at the table were having a rough time getting their drinks refilled and there was over an hour wait for food. I positioned myself over at the bar and pretty much immediately got a beer and commenced socializing with colleagues I haven't seen in quite a while.
As the even wore on our part started to shrink and we were finally able to get everyone at the table. I had some interesting appetizers and my favorites were the ones called 'Puppy Tails'. They were basically pepperoni slices baked into bread and then cut down to bite size, served or course with marinara. They were delicious. The other app I tried was called a "Dog Bone' and it was basically a cheese bread with some olive oil on it, also served with marinara.
As things started to slow down I ordered a medium pizza to go and finished up my final beer and then we called it a night. A great time was had and I could see myself going here more often if I lived closer. Oh well, it's perfect for...
Read moreThis brewpub is great! When our party of 14 (!!) showed up without a reservation, the server who greeted us said, "You REALLY should have called ahead!" with a smile. She actually hooked us up, and after a few tables left in 5 or 10 minutes, she let us rearrange them and even bring in a table outside to fill a gap. That's awesome service. As for the beer: I only tried the Uber Schwarz, which is the closest thing they have to an IPA. Well, it's a black IPA. It's GOOD, though not what I was expecting - very malty, almost porter-like. Good anyway. If I ever make it back to VA Beach, I'll definitely try more. I know they have a Beekeeper Ale which is gluten free and made from honey — so more of a mead, really — but some folks in our huge party really liked that one. But just as much of a star here is the pizza. These guys are doing it RIGHT. Having five years of experience as a pizza maker myself, I appreciated their pre-configured suggestions, like the one with tomato sauce, hot sausage, pinches of sauerkraut, and some spicy mustard drizzled on top. REALLY GOOD. I also appreciated their BLT-style pie, and even the basic cheese pie was really good. They do have some salad options as well. Definitely check...
