As my grandmother use to say, "So good, makes you want to slap your Grandma!" (She was allowed to say that, since she was MY Grandma!) I really don't even know what that means, other than to indicate that something was really delicious! LOL!
We decided to try out the Virginia Beach location of Butcher's Son (we already knew their Chesapeake restaurant was the bomb diggity!). We rolled up for a late lunch , (around 3:00 p.m. on a Saturday) and the place was only partially full. The waitress brought us garlic rolls and butter, as we decided on what we wanted for lunch. It was 3 of us and we decided we really wanted to taste a few dishes, but only wanted a small serving of each.
We settled on splitting the 8 ounce tenderloin with the two sides that accompany a steak meal, choosing the roasted Brussels sprouts and the sweet potato casserole. We also added a side of home fries. The steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and was as tender as my heart. The Brussel sprouts were seasoned well, but a little under-cooked. The sweet potato casserole was tasty and the home fries were huge and crispy (not even a hint of oil...air fried perhaps?)
Even though we were all pretty full, we decided to splurge on a shared small mason jar of banana pudding (homemade...not the artificially flavored stuff) Layers of diced bananas, crumbled Vanilla Wafers, vanilla pudding and topped with a toasted meringue.
Yummy food, excellent service and a beautiful ambiance. Perfect place to take your Sweetie! We rolled out of there (literally...my Mom was nicely accommodated in her wheelchair) with full tummies and big grins on our faces!
Update: July 6, 2019 Returned tonight for my wife's birthday. They asked me when I called and later when our waiter introduced himself if we were there for a special occasion, but they didn't do anything to help us celebrate, so I'm not sure why they even ask.
It was slammed full tonight at 7:00 pm! We had a very attentive waiter but I think two meals w 2 glasses of wine, two sides per meal and a Caesar Salad that we shared, is still pricey at $120+ $24 tip! Tables are packed in, so much so that every time a wait staff member would walk by, they would ram into my Mother's wheelchair.
A very strong recommendation would be to make the restrooms handicap friendly in reality. The two tables and chairs in that size of bathroom is anything but handicap accessible. I basically had to rearrange the bathroom to fit my Mother's wheelchair in the door. The door is on a spring hinge, so you're fighting that, as well as the excessive furniture in there. It was also poorly stocked and needed to be cleaned, big time! Not what I would expect from a high dollar restaurant.
Food is good...tenderloin was tender and cooked perfectly but the Brussels sprouts were majorly undercooked...like eating rocks. We were totally bummed when three out of the four times we've been there, they were out of their banana pudding (a favorite of locals).
Come on guys, you need to up your game if you want to stay...
Read moreTrying to continue my âHampton Roads Places to Tryâ list while eating clean is so hard lol. However my parents wanted to go out tonight and how. . could I say no to something thatâs not on my meal prep rolls eyes.
Well, prior to coming to the Butcherâs Son and saying âYesâ to me being a third wheel. . I had to look at the menu and they had options. I saw a couple of people posting the build your own burger and I was excited about that. However, when I got there I quickly learned that was a lunch thing. HAVE NO FEAR, they had other options that I was interested in.
For an appetizer we had the French Dip Springrolls. Not going to lie, I had a piece. It was very good. My dad said that the jam really complemented it. My mom ended up getting the She Crab Soup. . I also had a spoon LOL. My mom said that this was the best She Crab she had in the area. Unlike some other restaurants, this soup still had texture and was not watered down. I can agree to this. Rolls were also brought out to the table .. splits one in half
I stuck to my âmeal planâ & ended up wanting to want more. I cherished an 8oz Salmon with a side of brocollini & asparagus. I originally ordered it with rice however, the kitchen ran out because it was very popular. No problem, Iâm not supposed to have carbs at dinner anyway LOL. i took slow bites of the salmon because when I tell yâall it was the best grilled salmon Iâve had. . whew. I feel like I am going to be back just for this. I donât think I want to try anything else.
My mom also got the salmon but instead of the brocollini, she got the mash with sour cream on the side. My dad ended up getting the Smoked Gouda and Beef Tip Pasta. He was a fan. Normally he doesnât finish his meals when we go out, however he finished this one. It didnât stand a chance. For dessert my mom and dad shared cream brĂ»lĂ©e.
Our night wouldnât have been what it was without the service of Savannah. She was very friendly and helpful during our time at the Butcherâs Son. She also gave great recommendations for our first time. The kitchen lived up to her hype. She carried great conversation and when we needed something she was very attentive. I know for a fact when we came back, I want to request her.

As I walked to the bathroom I noticed the bar area. It was really nice. Also, there was a private room that could be available for bigger parties. The bathrooms were very clean. The choice in mirrors and decor were done well. Will be back! I think I found a new...
Read moreOn June 7th, I patronized this establishment in celebration of my husband's 40th birthday. We won't be back. Our reservation was set for 5:00p and when we arrived arrived, there were NO other parties in the area. Shortly after being seated, two other parties arrived. Our servers took drink and appetizer orders. This particular server asked about the number of persons yet to arrive (there would be an additional fee for having less than %75 of the party present.) Exactly 15 of 20 persons arrived and her demeanor seemed to change. The secondary server had managed to take 4 orders out of 11.
Our primary server took orders and while the remainder of the party waited: the 4 received their food, the 2 other large parties have also received food. We were the first in the room to order but the last to eat.
I did not care for the shrimp cocktail and would've appreciated knowing that they were not prepared in the traditional manner. One of our party members had to have his steak remade 3 times at which time the server stuck her finger quite practically on his streak to ask how his steak was. When he expressed his displeasure, she proceeded to question what kinds of steakhouses he was accustomed to. It was tactless to say the least.
My husband's New York strip steak was listed on their website (not Google) for $39. It was not only overcooked but also overpriced (the menu in restaurant gives a different price. ) His steak was ordered medium and was served half medium- well and the other half well. Additionally, his potato wedges while a nice size were grossly under cooked.
I honestly did not return his items to the kitchen for fear of retaliation. The wait for food was so long that the other two large parties that were seated AFTER us had already been served, fed and paid their bills. This is just concerns for my husband's food and doesn't include issue that others had with their orders.
I'm not sure if she felt that we were incapable of paying the bill, if we weren't prepared and able to tip or if she simply did not like that fact that she wouldn't receive additional payment because we did in fact meet our 75%. The treatment and rapid decline of care at this restaurant was both unfortunate...
