China House — Restaurant in Virginia

Edited 9/17/25: there has been a significant change in the quality of food, and China House has returned to serving the reliably good food that we had grown accustomed to. Since we hadn't been able to find another place for Chinese takeout out that we liked, we tried China House again out of sheer desperation and am so glad we did!

Edited 1/31/24 to say, over the last 6 months, some of the food has changed - specifically the steamed dumplings, pork egg foo young, and the chicken wings. And not for the good. They confirmed when I called the supplier for the dumplings had changed. So, I'm assuming that's also why the other dishes are no longer tasty. Avoid the General Tso chicken - too many times over the last year, the chicken has been tough, like it had been heated in the microwave. Entire meals have been thrown in the trash and money wasted. Higher prices, lesser quality food = time to find another place for Chinese take-out.

We've been looking for another Chinese takeout place since our regular place changed for the worst. We tried several in our area but none were worth a return visit. Discovered China House last night and the food was very tasty. Staff was welcoming and friendly and the restaurant clean. I usually have had a great experience with this place. However, recently their food has gotten worse or should I say horrible. The last two times we ordered the chicken and broccoli and it was horrible. It appeared to be covered in a gelatin brown sauce and tasted like a whole bunch of starch. The first time I let it pass and thought it was a mistake, so I decided to order again. My mistake!!!! Once again, chicken and broccoli with gelatin like sauce. This time I decided to call, my mistake as well. I was told that they make their chicken and broccoli with a lot of flour in order to avoid spills in the delivery drivers car. When I asked for a refund I was told I had to come in and bring the food back instead of them picking it up and bringing back my money. What sense does that make? I told the woman on the phone I would not order from them anymore and she became irate. I told her I would give her a bad review, she told me that's okay give us a bad review. So that's...

My wife, family & I have been going to China House for almost 3 years. It used to be the best Chinese place in Mechanicsville. Lately though the food has decreased in quality & the service is absolutely horrible. The lady that takes orders is a detestable, abhorrent person. My wife ordered 2 general tsos chicken, she was 5 cent short. The lady yelled at my wife over a nickel & called her a liar. My wife & I left without the food, my wife was so upset she was almost in tears. I was shocked.. I went back the next day to speak to the lady about it & she claimed she didn’t even remember. Wow.
