Probably not a fair assessment since I haven't dined here for several years. My wife and I experienced this restaurant when they first opened and we found after a handful of repeat visits that their dishes tended to be a bit too salty for our taste. A little time after establishing themselves, they hired a new chef in which the food improved in taste and quality but still seemed salty even when we compared to other chinese food restaurants in Mechanicsville just to make sure we didn't have a biased opinion. Needless to say, this is why I have not revisited. My wife gets a craving for sushi and visits when they run specials certain nights during the week (I don't know if they still run the specials). My wife says the sushi is pretty good considering ...not the best but certainly much better than the convenient alternative at Kroger. Several of my neighbors rave about the place and say they have added an array of asian based foods that span several asian cultures...maybe it's time to give it another try and update my rating at...

Had Hunan chicken for lunch special. Husband had Sesame chicken. His was really hot and good. I asked for no rice. When I received my order, all the food was only on the left side of plate. You would assume presentation counted. My first bite was ice cold. Sauce was cold which was not pleasant. There were few vegetable and broccoli was mushy. Mushrooms looked stale and old. No carrots were to be seen. I waited for the waitress to come back so I could get my dish warmed up. I waited and waited. Finally I tried to eat before the food got even colder. My husband finished his dish, so I finally flagged the waitress. I had half my meal not eaten. I explained I didn't enjoy cold food. Instead of at least taking my dish off the bill, I was told the manager thought my dish was made first and sat while my husband's dish was being prepared. Manager advised she would let the kitchen know. Don't you think they knew already? Isn't it normal to make sure all food comes out hot at the same time. What a...

Ginger Red has the absolute best Asian food around, hands down. The prices are great, the quality of ingredients is Grade A and above, and the flavors are a combination of all that is right in the world. Their sushi rolls are fantastic and they even offer a lunch roll combo and a dinner roll combo, which is a great way to have a light, fresh, flavorful meal or to really have an awesome shareable appetizer. The Hot and Sour soup is also out of this world and they have the only Hokkaido style Egg Drop soup in town; flavored with corn, black pepper, and butter. It's worth the trip alone for a bowl of soup, a sushi roll or two, and the passionfruit tea.

This place is perfect for a date night or for bringing the whole family. And it's great for a business meeting. It's clean, family friendly, has truly excellent service, and from five star to folks on a budget there are options for everyone.

If you're looking for a fun, friendly, family owned and operated business to support then go here and have a...

I had such a fantastic experience at Ginger Red Asian Bistro in Mechanicsville! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was nothing short of amazing. The summer rolls were incredibly fresh, light, and full of flavor. Easily some of the best I’ve had anywhere. The buttery curry fried rice was another standout dish. Perfectly cooked, rich, and savory with just the right balance of spices. It’s the kind of comfort food you can’t stop eating. On top of the great food, the service was outstanding. Kat, in particular, went above and beyond to make my to go experience wonderful. She was friendly, attentive, and made sure I had everything I needed. It’s rare to find customer service that genuine and caring, but Kat absolutely nailed it. If you’re in Mechanicsville and craving incredible Asian cuisine paired with top-notch service, Ginger Red is the place to go. I’ll definitely be back!

I recently moved to RVA from NJ and have been searching for General Tso's Chicken like my fav place back home. This was my 6th place, and so far the best I've had. I'm pretty sure they use breast instead of thigh, which I prefer. The chicken is tender and not too crunchy, although it could have been a bit more crisp. The spice level is low, so if you want it spicy (or crispy) make a request when you order. This was by far the most expensive Chinese take out I've had, at $16 with only a small container of white rice and 3 pieces of perfectly-cooked brocoli, not raw and not mushy. I picked up a pint of white rice from the spot around the corner for $2, which combines for 2 meals at under $10 each. I can live with that, considering how good the chicken is. Also, I really like the diversity among the staff. The restaurant looks very clean and inviting. Good job Ginger Red!

My family and I have eaten inside and take-out numerous times over the years with Ginger Red and unfortunately have seen a decline in quality and taste. We try something new most visits just to see if another dish tastes better than our mediocre typical dishes. We like the atmosphere and convenience of the location. But tonight's meal was VERY unfortunate to be nice. Pictured is apparently a Halls cough drop wrapper I found buried in my Mongolian beef dish. Aside from eating a good portion of the dish before seeing the neatly folded wrapper, my immediate concern is how someone participating in creating my dish was sick!! Since I'm leaving a long review, I will add my Mongolian beef ($15.25) and my husband's teriyaki chicken ($13.95) were both bland and mine was watery. Not worth the price. It's all very disappointing.
