I started patronizing this restaurant perhaps a year ago and was impressed enough by the quality and value of the food that I became a regular weekly, sometimes more often, patron. I've had everything on their menu and rarely felt disappointed and never overcharged.
Recently, however, it's been impossible to continue to be a customer. I've always called for takeaway, so pandemic conditions haven't affected how I buy, but twice now their employees have hung up on me or made it clear that my custom isn't important. I haven't been calling after or close to the end of their modified operating hours, either. On May 18th, I called before 4:00 PM to have an employee pick up the receiver and immediately hang up on me. I thought they might be closed because of the health crisis, but drove by later and found they were still open. The next week, May 25th, I called at 5:20 PM and asked if they were still taking orders. I was asked to call back in 10 minutes by an employee. I did so and the employee again just picked up the phone and slammed it back down on the receiver. I decided I was not going to put up with that treatment and called again. The employee asked me to politely hold and ask if they could place an order that close to closing. She left me hanging on hold for 1 hour and 20 minutes. I wasn't standing around, but I wasn't going to accept being neglected in that manner after being a loyal patron for so long, so I left my phone on and heard EVERYTHING going on in that kitchen and busied myself otherwise as I waited for somebody to remember the line. They eventually did, I said hello, and was hung up on.
If you don't want to take an order or are too busy, just say so instead of treating a recurring customer as a nuisance. Rating is still 3 stars because objectively speaking the food has been good and their old employees...
Read moreI've been waiting until I had time to write a thorough review because it was just THAT good. I was in Virginia for a work trip and if you have celiac, you know traveling can be difficult. I stumbled upon Grunow's Kitchen and was eager to try it as everything is 100% gluten free. It did NOT disappoint. Infact, I think I'll dream about the food for the rest of my life. Seriously! We ate here twice during our trip and the food was phenomenal both times. I got the chicken tender platter with mac n' cheese & fries. I also brought home loads of baked goods and wish I bought 10 more of those frosted cookies. They were amazing! The taste was perfect, the texture was perfect, everything was perfect. GOOD gluten free food (especially fresh) is hard to find. But it can absolutely be found at Grunow's Kitchen.
Our waitress, Callie, was amazing. She was honestly one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. She made sure we had everything we needed and more! She was incredibly helpful and gave us some great menu recommendations. She was on top of everything and seriously, great at her job!
I don't have plans to return to Virginia anytime soon, as I live and work in Michigan, but I may need to plan a trip so I can eat at Grunow's Kitchen again.
Thank you, Grunow's Kitchen, for having a true celiac-safe establishment and delicious food! I hope you are in business for years and...
Read moreMy family and I get take out from here at least once a week. The food is very good. We are all dealing with issues arising from covid and restaurants have been hit harder than any other business, so we try and support the local restaurants as much as possible. I was trying to place an order the other day and was put on hold 4x. I had 2 different people picking up the phone and asking me the same questions. I asked the last person why I kept getting put on hold and then asked to repeat my order, and the woman remarks "we are really busy here right now, we have customers that are coming in that need to be sat and we are extremely short staffed!" I think most people by now understand the position that most businesses are in right now with trying to hire employees. It's tough, I get that. My suggestion would be to let people know when they order that it might take a few minutes to place their order, they are unfortunately under staffed, and they are doing the best they can. Totally understandable. Getting frustrated with customers for trying to place an order is not. To top that off, they now add 18% tip to all pick up orders. In short, I waited on hold 10 minutes, asked to repeat my order 3 times, was given an attitude for questioning why, and then charged 18% for a tip to pick up my to go order. Not good...
