I was so excited to visit this bakery and get some items that would remind me of home since I have been feeling home sick. They disappointed me in the quality of their items and I'm embarrassed for the people they are serving this low quality food as a representation of our Hispanic culture. Saddens me to the core!!!
Where do I begin! When I walked in I noticed all the amount of stuff they are selling to stay afloat and it was far from that "Bakery" culture that we are used to. The pastries are all covered in plastic wrap and behind plastic doors; the establishment is decently cleaned and everything looks good; key word: Looks good! Ha!
I tried the quesitos puertoriquenos (cheese filled phyllo doughs) and it was so dry; insanely dry and tasted like it was sitting there for at least 2-3 days. No Lie! Next, was the phyllo sugar twists (those were decent; could've used for sugar and less baking but it was good.
Now on to the main event; we bought a tres leches cake and a slice of flan. The tres leches was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Tres Leches? More like regular milk cake because all that you could taste was whole milk. It had no sweetness or flavor to it; then to top it off the cake was so mushy and had absolutely no flavor. We gave it two bites and threw the rest out; oh and the whip cream to cake ration was laughable. You basically received two cakes in terms of denseness with less than an inch of cream. Honestly the worse I have ever tasted. But if you thought that was BAD you would be wrong because the FLAN was straight up a disaster. The flan was so dense it was like eating an egg cake; so overcooked that it broke up worse than day old bread. The caramel tasted like an artificial product and was hands down the worse cook I had ever seen on a flan.
This place disappointed me so much. I really do love our Hispanic culture especially when it comes down to the food. This staff is lazy and tired because they don't even check the quality of their products. Oh and don't try to buy any of the products wrapped and sold there because there is a very good chance that you are purchasing expired soon. This place should be shut down for that terrible experience and selling people expired items. Never...
Read moreHave been coming here for years, and try to visit every couple months when we are nearby. Everything tastes amazing, and is super fresh, but it's the service that is the most incredible of all. Everyone is so warm and friendly and welcoming, every member of the staff is genuinely glad you are there and go out of their way to make you feel it. The variety is insane, so very many choices, and as I said before everything is so good, it is hard to decide. The prices are great. Many times I have easily put together a gorgeous tea/brunch of a huge selection of pan dulce for less than a grocery store coffee cake. The birthday cakes are stunning, but have to be eaten fast, because they are so fresh&moist and loaded down with fresh fruit fillings, that they won't keep any longer than 48hrs once cut,so even though you'll want to-definitely don't order a bigger size than your event calls for just to have leftovers. Again, the owners/staff are the best around. Every time I go in,even if it has been a while, the owner remembers and asks about my family. They always give my daughter a cookie, and give me either a cookie or a small piece of soft candy to take to my profoundly disabled brother, who they remember just from me bringing him in one day (years ago!) when I was taking him to his special adult day Center. They remember that I have special ordered their meringues for my mother before, and if they were about to make some on a day I come in, have often offered to make some giant ones specifically in the color she likes best for me to come back and get the next day once they are ready. That kind of attention to detail hasn't been around here locally since William's or Dot's or the original Ukrops bakery were still open. Can't recommend...

On Saturday I offered to help a friend who was going to throw a surprise 60th Birthday party. I accepted the challenge to provide the Birthday cake. I did this knowing "I knew a guy" that does fantastic looking, but even better tasting, custom cakes.
So off I went, across the river to South Richmond, to see if I could trade on my friendship and ask a herculean request. Armed with a photo gotten from Google, 30 potential guests and very little time.
Even I was surprised when I was given the response "No Problem".
Yesterday was the big day, arrived @ 4:00 PM to pickup for a 6:00 party. Walking in with bated breath, I was quickly greeted with "All ready, let me go get it from the back".
Already amazed that it truly was ready I was simply blown away when I saw the spectacularly executed cake. Mind you this wasn't some simple kids sheet cake. Rather a custom made shaped cake. Tres Leches with Dulce de leches filling. Very specific and a favorite of the Columbian Birthday Boy.
To say that the cake was a hit is a gross understatement. Everyone LOVED it! Amazingly enough it tasted even better than it looked!
So I say with deep & heart felt...
