If you’re looking for a culinary celebration that always delivers the best service, best flavors, and best cocktails, look no further than Potros Mexican Restaurant. Our first order was takeout, and I expected a lot from that photo my husband sent me, which demonstrated how neatly the staff at Potros had packed our meal, and there were chips, dips, napkins, and plasticware. After we unpacked our chicken fajitas and chicken quesadilla, we sat down to a very colorful spread with fresh red salsa, queso fresco sauce, house fried tortilla chips, fresh guacamole salad, Mexican fried rice (with corn and green beans, no less!), and creamy refried beans topped with cheese.
As for the chicken fajitas, they were prepared exactly how I had hoped: sweet yellow and red peppers, bold green peppers, and zesty white onions teamed up with the juicy, all white meat chicken strips for a burst of char grilled flavor, wrapped in a soft flour tortilla. Of course, there’s the guacamole salad, which includes chopped iceberg lettuce, ripe red diced tomatoes, housemade guacamole, and shredded queso fresco. My husband loves to dip his chips into the guacamole, and I’m happy to share!
Let’s move on to the ooey, gooey, melty cheesy, chicken quesadilla! Wrapped in a soft flour tortilla and finished in a skillet, the tender chicken bites or all white meat chicken went hand in hand with the hot melted cheese to deliver a savory, creamy bite. Served with side dishes of Mexican fried rice, luscious refried beans, and garden-fresh guacamole salad, this entree is a sure-fire way to end your long and tiring day.
On another occasion, we decided to try dining in at Potros. Since we were dining in, we didn't want to miss out on the fresh guacamole, made especially for you right before your eyes, tableside. The lady who prepared our guacamole skillfully opened that avocado intact, before our eyes, and removed the pit, before spooning out the vivid green flesh into a bowl. Next, she squeezed the tart juice from one lime into the avocado, before mixing in the diced white onions and diced red tomatoes.
I wanted to try something else on the menu that particular day, so I opted for the shrimp fajitas. They did not disappoint! The shrimp was cooked perfectly, with a meaty texture and stunning natural flavor, accentuated by the grilled onions and peppers. My husband was so enamored with the traditional chicken and cheese quesadilla, that he did not venture from his destiny.
On our next visit, we asked for the Potros Drinks Menu. Wow! What an extensive cocktail and beverage menu! There were so many listings, so many choices, for wines, beers, martinis, shots and shooters, daiquiris, mixed drinks, and of course, margaritas and other tequila drinks. It had been a while since I’d had a margarita, and we had planned on ordering the nachos, so it seemed to me like a done deal. Cheerfully, I ordered the frozen strawberry margarita, garnished with fresh lemon and lime wedges. Our server was very thoughtful and brought us two straws, so I graciously offered my husband a few sips of my sweet, cold, fruity treat. Citrus flavors of lemon, lime, and orange danced with rich, ripened strawberries, and a vibrant shot of tequila. My tastebuds were delighted!
For our midday snack, we were determined to enjoy the best nachos we could find on the menu, and so we landed on the Nachos Supreme. Ah, three different proteins were featured on a bed of just-now-fried, crispy tortilla chips: spicy taco beef, smoky pulled chicken, and luxurious refried beans. Atop our mound of meats was a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce, diced red tomatoes, queso fresco, and a whopping dollop of sour cream.
All in all, I would say that Potros is not only the best Mexican restaurant around Richmond, but the best overall restaurant that we’ve been to in...
Read moreI wasn't overall impressed with this place. I started out and saying that the staff and service was a five-star. The food that we cannot though wasn't great. This place is Extremely Loud it's just a big Square with nothing to absorb any of the noise so we found it very distracting trying to have a conversation because you could pretty much hear everyone else's and you would have to talk above them. They do have a little patio on the side but it was getting ready to storm when we got there so we sat inside. They do a few different items that I haven't seen on a bunch of are there Mexican menus, we ordered an appetizer of the bacon wrapped shrimp. It was pretty good but the shrimp was pretty dry. Really the main reason I'm getting a three-star as I ordered their tropical taquitos. Typically fajitas come out steaming and usually seem pretty fresh. The fajitas that I got seems like they had been soaked in for hours the scallops and vegetables were completely soggy and they were a little bit on the cold side, I only took a couple of bites and pushed it away because I couldn't finish up it just didn't taste very good. I also thought that they were a little bit on the expensive side. I know Mexican isn't as cheap as it used to be but this being a new place their menu seemed to be a little bit more expensive than summer the other Mexican restaurants in the area. There's so many other Mexican places to choose from I probably...
Read moreThe food was alright and the service was the same. I went with my daughter on mother's day along with some friends who were already there when we arrived. I ordered quesadillas and that's not what I got but it took so long I didn't want to wait anymore so I just picked at it. I also told the waitress I'm sharing with my daughter so can we just have an extra plate. She said okay buty giant plate came out alone and again it took so long to get a second plate I'd just put the plate infront of my child. For dessert I ordered the churros. That also took a very long time to get. I ordered them right after my meal but by the time my friends were done eating their dessert the waitress informed me she was placing my order now. So the time I initially ordered it wasn't sufficient for some reason. I love the smooth bachata music that was playing in the background. I loved that all the staff spoke Spanish if necessary. I enjoyed sitting outside on this nice day. Then when the churros finally came they were filled with apple jelly or something. So they again weren't what I had ordered. The menu just said churros. It didn't mention any type of filled ones or not. So my child picked at them but we ended up boxing them up to give away at home to...
