Arrived at the Sugar Shack at 11:10 am, there were tables available for seating, it didn't seem too busy. When we went to order the cashier explained that if we wanted to order pizza it was going to be a minimum of 30 minutes to wait because there were 7 pizzas ahead of us. We decided to order something else because we thought it would be faster to not order pizza. I ordered the adult grilled cheese, and my friend ordered the Caesar salad with chicken. The total was $32. We were never given a wait time. We stood by the window thinking it would be maybe 10 to 15 minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting I went and asked how much longer it would be, and they told me another 6 minutes. We ended up being there for a total of 37 minutes from walking in to walking out with our take-out food. When I received the bag of takeout food from the server I told her that it was a ridiculous amount of wait time and she barked back that if I was on a time crunch I should have called my order in. I told her that if I were given a wait time to begin with I would have made a better decision, but since she never said how long the wait was I wasn't able to change my mind at that point. She then asked if I wanted pizza. I said no, I just wanted a wait time at the beginning and this could have all been avoided. Then she got all upset and snapped, "I don't know what you want me to do?!"
The grilled cheese was extremely soggy on the bottom as you can see in the photo. I wasn't able to get a picture of my friend's salad as she went her separate way, but she did say that the lettuce was wilted. She said the cranberry bread was good. The bacon on my sandwich was fatty and didn't taste that great. I didn't eat the sandwich, unfortunately.
I am taking this as a learning experience and I hope...
Read moreOk, my 3 stars is a combo rating. The place is a gem in Virginia -on the iron range in general. The baked goods are eye candy of the best kind, the menu, which includes the bakery items, sandwiches, wraps, pizzas, ice cream, coffee and espresso, all sounds delicious. However, baking seems to be slightly off for some items. For example, the pumpkin chocolate bar is kind of stodgy, a pasty mouth feel that I don't know enough about baking to describe how it could happen. It's not really pleasant. There is also a lack of spice that keeps the bar from having any real standout flavor. Similarly, on a previous visit, a cardamom roll (possibly with orange) was so overpowering with cardamom as to not be a pleasant flavor and the dough was .... doughy as though under baked. We actually threw it out. However, a consistent hit are the cookies. Crisp around the edges and soft in the middle. I wouldn't hesitate to try their cookies anytime. The coffee drinks are also delicious. And what a treat to be in this area and get a great tasting expresso drink or other type of coffee. Lastly, we came after the lunch hour. Perhaps up to 1/2 the tables were littered with leftover food and dishes from the lunch crowd. Very uninviting and unsanitary looking in this cute space. No reason to not have been after that as the place was slow and almost empty at this point but workers were not attending the dining room. We will return as the place is worth it for so many reasons, but some attention to execution and service would bring this up to a much...
Read moreI had ordered car cookies for my sons birthday 2 months ahead of time. I was asked to email photos of what I’d like to them and I did. Then I called 3 weeks before the pick up date and asked to push it back a week. when the time came I had received a message the day of pick up at 8 am from the owner saying that she didn’t realize they were designed cookies that her worker didn’t put enough information down on the paper. So she gave me the option that she could try and get the cookies done in time or that she could give me some cupcakes instead. I had just told them to do what was easiest because it was 8 am and I was supposed to pick them up by 12. I wasn’t very interested in having rushed cookies so I said I’d do the cupcakes. I figured shed come and apologize for the mistake when I picked the cupcakes up. I didn’t see her until I was in my car driving away and saw her in the back room. I wasn’t upset that there was a mistake made just upset that it was given 2 months ahead of time and then was bummed to get plain vanilla (not even asked what flavor I’d like) cupcakes with frosting nothing unique about it at all. I figured g they will be good considering the price but they didn’t taste very well either. Not usually the type to write reviews but I don’t want it to happen to someone else. Luckily my boy is 1 and doesn’t understand yet. Would’ve been pretty upsetting if he did. I know that mistakes happen, I just hope they figuring out way to stop it from...
