My partner and I have had our eyes on Moody's for a while now, after trying and enjoying their sinfully delicious sandwiches in their Back Bay location. With a car handy today, we finally got the chance to come here for dinner. We made a reservation for 2 people at 5pm and were able to snag it day of, but upon arrival it was still reasonably quiet. They started us off with "snacks" of truffle corn ships and a finocchio salami that was fatty, salty, and delicious. We also ordered a charcuterie board of three things to split ($19) -- the pork and pistachio pate was rich and texture-wise very satisfying, the wild boar was quite a special taste, very different from your typical pork-based charcuterie, and the barnhouse cheese was a nice, nutty, hard cheese. It also came furnished generously with raw honey, pickled onions and spicy peppers, and garlic croutons/bread.
For entrees, I got the half chicken with roasted veggies (brussels, carrots, and broccoli) and house-made spaetzle ($28). The dish was lovely, the chicken was well-cooked although a tad underseasoned, though the crispy skin was perfectly done. I have to applaud them for their veggie to starch ratio -- I had a lovely, generous heaping of root vegetables, when I usually find I go through the veggies much faster than I can work through the starches. My partner's bacon and egg pasta ($16) was also very tasty, with a great runny egg on top, although I think a tad under-salted as well.
For dessert, we wanted the blacksmith pie--the perfect salty, sweet way to round out a rainy evening...however, after waiting for ~10 minutes the waitress sadly informed us it hadn't turned out well and they would offer us another dessert on the house. We got the carrot cake, which was solid...the ginger/carrot schmear was surprisingly savory and paired well with the cake, although the ice cream was almost TOO fatty and was served almost sliding off the plate. It was comp'd, though, so can't complain too much!
The ambiance of the restaurant is sexy industrial, with a thumping bass and a pretty good mix of rap that isn't too insistent as to interrupt dinner conversation.
Overall, I had a great experience at Moody's and now that I work close by, will be stopping in often for...
Read moreI don't want to write a mediocre review about Moody's because we love this place. Have been coming here since you opened. However we feel compelled to do so hoping someone in management is seeing this input. Lately our own experience and also from what we have heard back from friends who we recommended the place to, both our experiences have been sub-par. The biggest issue is timing. Food comes out after waiting a very long time. Seem to be problems in the kitchen. While the quality of the food has typically been excellent in the past, last week the food was just ok. Something's up and it needs to be addressed as it is becoming a pattern. Over the past 4 months we've been there 4 times. 3 of the 4 experiences left us scratching our heads as we experienced long wait times for drinks, food, etc. You guys need to have a large staff meeting to figure out what's going on and revamp your kitchen processes. We will come back but our patience is wearing thin. Unfortunately our friends who ate there 2 times will not be...
Read moreChef-owner Joshua Smith's Delicatessan should be a big boost for Waltham's ever-changing Moody Street retail inventory, which has been in an up-and-down flux for decades. The menu is breakfast or lunch all day until 7PM. Counter orders are brought to you at limited seating. Our lunch featured an excellent daily special sandwich: wagyu burnt ends of brisket, nicely moist, w/ramp pesto and pickles on buttery white toast. The New England Charcuterie platter (N.E.C. being a separate business run by Smith and which is destined to greatly expand an already excellent Boston charcuterie scene) featured a fine selection of salumi-style meats, a bit of cheese, plus pickles and mustard. A side of potato salad was well-cooked, moist, flavorful and assertive, although a bit more salt would have made it perfect. A Brooklyn Lager beautifully complemented the rest. The delicatessan is delightfully Bologna-esque, and its adjacent full-size Backroom restaurant for evening diners beginning at 4PM (not yet tried) is tastefully...
