This was my first time visiting since the new owner has taken over. I'm a firm believer that all new establishments need a second chance if the first experience isn't good. Because this business recently opened and my experience wasn't great, they will get a second chance in the future.
The bar area and flooring throughout has been nicely remodled. The new bar is very large and accommodating. Some high tops were removed from around the bar and replaced with cushioned benches. The benches are high and uncomfortable becuase the table heights are not high enough. By adding the benches, there is less actual seating than when high tops were present. I'd bring back high tops.
Service on our visit was slow. This may be because the server had too many tables, was new, or other reason. It took longer than expected to be greeted by our server and to make a drink order. Once ordered, drinks took longer than expected as well. There wasn't much reassessment of our need for drinks or pleasure with our meals. One issue which I believe that takes away from the server/patron interaction is the use of handheld POS device. Several items ordered were missed by the server because she was focused on using the handheld. These items were only identified as missing when we asked to have the order read back. Get rid of the handheld POS and bring back pen and paper or memory.
The menu was very, very limited. In fact it was so limited it was difficult to make a decision what to order. We asked the server if there was a separate bar menu and she replied the new "larger" menu is coming. That would be VERY important to share. Had we not asked, we would not come back for a second chance because the current menu was so limited.
For apps we ordered steak bites (old Mike's big seller) and French onion soup. This was at least 10 minutes before we placed our main order of a cheesesteak and ribs. After a longer than expected time a kitchen staff member brought out the soup. I asked about the steak bites and he said it was coming right up. Immediately after, another kitchen worker arrived with our whole meal. This is not acceptable. When we asked the gentleman about it, he said the apps were put in at the same time as the food order. Was this a server issue? POS problem? Steak bites and French onion soup were on point! Ribs were cool and overdone, shredding after falling off of the bone. The meat was bland and lacked seasoning. The only flavor was BBQ sauce. Fries were soft and mushy. The cheesesteak appeared dry and light on cheese. We opted to box the cheesesteak for later because it did not appear appetizing. Later that evening we tried it and discarded it because it was overdone.
At no time did any staff member ask us how our food was. This is bizarre considering the place just reopened. You would think the input would be important. A taller gentleman who we believe was the owner was present. He spoke to staff and only one or two patrons who he seemed to know. It would have been well received for him to make his rounds to patrons and ask for input.
In closing, I like what the new owner has done to the look inside. I am hoping the issues we experienced are only related to new staff and being unfamiliar with good customer service. The limited menu is not great. Most of the food items we had were well below expectations.
I am hopeful they can pull it together and be successful. Currently, they seem to have a lot of work ahead of them in order to get a loyal following. Unfortunately, if thes issues remain, this Mike's will suffer the same fate...
Read moreFirst off, I had my parents 50 anniversary there last year and really enjoyed everything. Food, service, and management was all good. We were there tonight and were very disappointed, and we come to find out that it is "under new management", which is definitely not a good thing in this case.
The whole situation was awful. They had a bartender who was basically the only staff person we saw all night. He brought out the bread, he served drinks, he brought the coffee, he cleared the plates. It was ridiculous. There was one other guy who made an appearance every 45 minutes or so but that was it. Don't get me wrong, they people were very nice but short staffed.
The appetizers we're good. There were 2, a bruschetta plate and the other was crispy pita chips with a delicious crab dip. The problem is......there were 50 people at this event and they brought out what was an equivalent of a standard plate of dip. It was gone before a third of the people had some. They were so stingy and the people paying for it had to basically beg for another bowl. The answer given was "well the first serving was 3 bowls worth". 3 bowls worth?????? It was a plate with about an inch thick of dip. When they finally brought out a second bowl, they never brought out any more chips, which was originally about 30 chips. 30 chips for a 50 person event???? What a disgrace.
After that the dinner was not that great. It was buffet style and the chicken marsala looked like dark brown gravy. I thought it was beef in gravy at first. The ziti looked like it was going to be a delicious vodka sauce because it was a pink sauce, but if I didn't see the color, I would have sworn it was just a plain tomato sauce. Nothing special at all. They also had salmon which was a complete joke. The tray came out with literally about 16 pieces of fish about the size of 1" x 2" squares. Again, 16 pieces for 50 people. The pieces were so far apart from each other on the tray it was comical. The people paying had to ask again for them to bring more out because everything was empty before half the people got their food.
As I said earlier, me and my family had a wonderful experience a year or so ago when we held my parents 50th anniversary there, which was the reason, the people tonight, chose this event, but after tonight's experience, I would never recommend this place for anyone to hold an event in the upstairs hall. Seems like being under new management means far worse quality and service.

Read moreHave to give the new Mikes York Road Tavern just and "OK" based on our lunch there yesterday. First, the chairs used in the dining room were awful. When we got there we were sitting on a bench/booth with two chairs facing us, when our dining partners arrived they mentioned how uncomfortable the chairs were, so we switched. The chairs were indeed uncomfortable, feeling as though the foam padding inside the chair was either worn away or non-existent. Another couple seated a couple of tables away from us mentioned the same thing as they sought to exchange chairs with other tables to find something that was more comfortable. So first impressions, not so good. Party of 4, we ordered two appetizers, the spinach dip and wings. Spinach dip came with tortilla chips - a little surprising as many other spinach dips at other venues come with bread or some variety of the same. The wings were bland - had far better at many other restaurants. Entrees were 3 burgers and a half rack of ribs. Burgers again, just OK - nothing bad, but just had better elsewhere for the same if not lower price point. The ribs were excellent - top marks there. We finished off with a couple of desserts, the brownie sundae and the peanut butter cup pie - both pretty good (although obviously ordered in from a separate vendor, doesn't look like any of these were prepared by the kitchen), and the pricing at $6 was welcomed, you could have set the price higher based on other restaurants. The service was top notch and friendly, everything came in a timely manner and our server Justin as at the top of his game making sure our waters were filled, etc., so very high marks there. The recently remodeled dining room was very inviting, and the acoustics were good so you can easily here your dining partner's conversations (I would guess the room was 1/2 full at the time we had lunch). So just an "OK" review, we may try it again since there was more good things than bad to report, but PLEASE do something about...
