Made a same-day Yelp reservation for Sunday brunch and arrived on time with our table ready. Next to us was another reserved for a larger party who hadn't arrived yet once we left almost an hour and a half later. Pro: Reservations are prepped early and maintained. Con: Come back another time if that reserved table is the last standing so make reservations people!
Here is classic southern food with some American classics and a few soul-added takes served in a setting crossing between cafe in size and structure x diner in offerings and refillable coffee x hip hospitality in service. The space, while small, is very clean and up to the times with technology being well-utilized as dine-in orders are taken on an iPad and online orders on their website or Eat24. Everything else counteracts that: the location in a small outdoor complex, the chalk board with the written special of the day, the cottage dining style and old school soul, R&B and funk music. Then there's the owner who, I'm assuming is one of the brothers, engages with diners and is eager to serve with a casual and minimally classic but modern jazzy style to boot (vest over a fitted tee, driver's cap and thick patterned socks in black Birkenstocks anyone?). I bet if you became a regular, he would remember and greet you like a friend. First timer? He can still joke and strike up a conversation.
The medium-sized but simple menu is a plus. As everything is made-to-order, expect to wait 15-20 minutes for food to come out. Highlights are the fried goods--chicken, gater, catfish, fries, you name it. Not oily or heavy and the breading isn't too thick (it is a bit more on the gater nuggets and some parts of chicken). It's all a pretty clean eat for what it is. Their steak cut FRIES have a crisp exterior and piping hot fluffy potato-y goodness inside. Oh, and the seasonal FRIED GREEN TOMATOES are fantastic. Crisp and tangy with bite. No mush.
The SPICY BAYOU SHRIMP AND GRITS come with 2 eggs and a biscuit. Tiger shrimp come with tail shells attached and their take on the bayou sauce isn't spicy. Interestingly, whatever the GRITS are laid on is the shape it retains once it cools down and the surface becomes almost smooth and shiny. Not a plate of mush and almost like jello but without the jiggle or texture. I'm thankful it's not bland.
First time I had their BISCUITS, I didn't like it. This time around it looked different and tasted better. They make changes and evolve, guys! What started out dry and bland is now soft and slightly moist fluffy on the inside, if that makes sense. The outer surface dry and firm with body. Pour some of their in-house syrup over it or dab it into your egg yolk. Not sure how to describe their syrup other than it's not your typical and quite distinct in color with a particular aroma when consumed. Is it cane? Molasses? A mix? May I say my over easy eggs were perfection? The only downside I can think of is how their water tasted like melted ice cubes.
TIP: Know what you want to try? Call beforehand to check availability. While ordering, the owner informed us the red velvet waffle was not available that day (what one of us wanted) and when we ordered gater nuggets, he headed into the kitchen to check if any were left. While you're at it, may as well try making a reservation. Not sure if they accept by phone but doesn't hurt to try as the one downside to reserving through Yelp is losing the benefit of anonymity as a Yelp reviewer. Not sure if that's the reason we were checked up on often or of my receiving four eggs with my biscuit. Nevertheless, appreciated the gesture.
Make sure to sign up for their special offers and specials on their website. Once you do, you'll receive a code for $5 off your first online order of $30 or more. Goes to show it never hurts to do some research outside of Yelp :P
The food here may not pack a major punch of flavor as one would assume of southern food fare but the execution is well done. Clean, subtle, simple and fresh is just their style of cookin' done...
Read moreCozy and inviting. This family run restaurant is great place for brunch. Very unique experience and worth the wait.
We went on a Sunday morning with a small group to celebrate a friend's birthday. Unfortunately, they do don't accept reservations so there was a bit of a wait to be seated. The reception area offers comfortable seating and is nicely decorated and while you are waiting the you get to witness beautiful plates and wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen to the dining area.
It's important to realize that they make everything from scratch and all meals are made to order. If you're looking for a quick in and out dining experience this is probably not your place. But if you're willing to be patient, your patience will be rewarded with some incredible Southern comfort style home cooking. It's also a BYO so grab something for a brunch cocktail and enjoy the company you’re with while you wait.
Our server was one of the 4 brothers who operate the place and he advised us that the short rib dinner would take longer than the breakfast meals normally do so we were prepared to wait for our meals so we could all eat together. When that short rib on the bone appeared on the table (think tomahawk looking appearance) everyone's jaw dropped. It was served with mac and cheese, candied yams and the best collard greens anyone at the table had ever had. Outstanding.
The rest of us got breakfast meals and they were all delicious. The French toast was perfectly cooked, fluffy, crispy and served with eggs and bacon. Chicken and waffles were banging according to the birthday girl. Spicy shrimp in bayou sauce over grits was creamy and had tons of flavor. My wife ordered the Uncle Bud Pancake which covered the large plate and was served with eggs and bacon. Unfortunately, her meal was delayed, but without even asking they comped her breakfast due to the delay.
I really can't say enough about their food, everything was fantastic. We arrived at 11:30 and seated around noon and we left the table around 1:30. They ran out of a few things on the menu but it's a small place that is only open from Thursday through Sunday. Since everything is scratch made it makes sense that they might run out of a few desserts as I would not expect they want leftovers on a Sunday that they wouldn't be able to serve the next weekend.
For anyone complaining in their reviews that the service is slow, you're not getting what this experience is supposed to be. Maybe we're all just used to faster service because most restaurants do a lot of pre prepping. And if you're a large restaurant that's a necessity. However, this cozy place is transparent on their menu that their meals take some time to prepare and I wouldn't trade the quality of the food I enjoyed for the sake of having it served faster.

Read moreI had been wanting to try this place for a while. This weekend I finally was able to and I only wish I had done it long before.
You wait outside for them to seat you. Inside the dining area is really cozy, lit like a jazz club with soothing bluish light and one end of the room that is set up for live music.
I asked the waiter for his recommendations because I wasn't sure if I wanted to try the shrimp and grits or the chicken and waffles. He highly recommended the seafood. So I went with the Bayou (spicy) Shrimp and Grits that comes with two eggs the way you like and a biscuit. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, the sauce was delicious and the grits were on point. The portion was substantial. The eggs were just the way I ordered them and the biscuit was one of the best I have had (and I had recently been down south) and was on the large side. The music and lighting added to make it an extremely relaxing meal. I was so impressed I knew I had to return soon to try the chicken and waffles.
So, this morning I went back even though I was just there yesterday. This time I asked my server which waffle he recommended the most (there are multiple options) and he immediately said the sweet potato one. So, I decided that was the way to go. He asked me what kind of chicken I preferred which surprised me as the menu indicates specific parts with each waffle. Evidently, you can choose so I immediately said thighs. He smiled and said, that is what he would have chosen. When the plate came out I was stunned how large the thighs were. They were crispy and golden. The waffle looked perfect but was dwarfed by the chicken. When I cut into the chicken, it was moist and tender while the breading was crunchy and not oily. It was probably the best fried chicken I have had in a very long time. The waffle was moist inside and perfectly cooked. It was melt in your mouth delicious with just a little butter added on top. Again, the recommendation was excellent.
The food, service and music were wonderful both times. I felt so relaxed after each meal because of the ambiance. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area and plan to return many times in the future. This is a wonderful sliver of the...
