We took our kids here for their first Big Boy experience since they’ve never been, and I was excited because I remember loving Big Boy as a kid. Unfortunately, this visit was a huge disappointment from start to finish.
My kids ordered the Fruity Pebble pancakes with a pop and a shake. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak meal, and my boyfriend ordered the Super Big Boy. About 10 minutes later, our server came back to say they were out of Fruity Pebbles, so the boys switched to strawberry shortcake pancakes and cookies & cream pancakes. Then another 20 minutes passed before the server returned to tell me they were also out of the Philly cheesesteak—30 minutes after I placed the order. The restaurant wasn’t even busy, so I have no idea why it took that long to tell me. I ended up settling for the mushroom Swiss burger.
When the food finally arrived, it was another letdown. The “strawberry shortcake pancakes” were just plain pancakes with three strawberries and strawberry syrup. The “cookies & cream pancakes” were literally just pancakes with one crushed Oreo sprinkled on top. Both were supposed to come with vanilla cream icing and whipped cream, but neither did. Even the milkshake was missing whipped cream. When we asked, the server just shrugged and said, “Oh, we’re out.”
As for the meals, my burger was greasy and flavorless, and my boyfriend’s burger was stacked so high he had to remove a patty just to take a bite. Nothing about the food matched the quality or presentation Big Boy used to be known for.
We spoke to the manager, but instead of listening, she was defensive, until my boyfriend mentioned his 10+ years of cooking experience. Only then did they take one pancake meal off the bill and discount one burger by 20%.
Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had. From unavailable menu items, missing ingredients, bland food, poor communication, and a dismissive manager, it was disappointment after disappointment. We will not be returning, and I do not recommend this...
Read moreMy husband and I thought it would be a nice "treat" to have lunch at Big Boys on 12 and Hoover. We were quickly seated and the waitress came over immediately to take our order.. I ordered sliders and fries, my husband ordered the soup and salad bar. He went up to plate a salad for himself, then the waitress brought the soup he ordered. After he finished a hearty plate of salad, he then ate a large bowl of soup. Approx..30 minutes went by, and my meal was no where in sight. I asked the waitress when she walked by, she looked a little startled, when I asked her, if they forgot my sliders..then she went to check on the order, came back and said it would be up shortly..another 10 to 15 minutes went by..my husband was now on his second bowl of soup, and I was still waiting for my meal. A few minutes later, Mt sliders were brought to me..ICE COLD, cheese was not melted..I told the waitress, assuring her that I know it wasn't her fault. She went and got the manager..I told him, that I had one bite, and they were not hot, and I did not want them..also told him how long I waited for them..He said that it had only been 12 minutes..I told him , that I did not know where he got his information from, but he was wrong, and that my husband was on his 2nd bowl of soup, and just about done. He said he would take the sliders off our bill, then the waitress brought my French fries.. I will not be going back there.. Very disappointed, and I was hungry, too..but after all that lost my appetite, and we went home.. I understand that it was not the waitresses fault..and do not blame her..but they need to improve their cooking skills there! Though I had only 1 bite of the slider..the restaurant definitely left a " bad" taste...
Read moreFirst of all, Big Boy's corporate offices are on Ryan Road and 9 1/2 mile road. There is still a Big Boy restaurant in front of the corporate offices.
That Big Boy was always busy. It was close, clean and convenient.
It was always busy.
None of my family members ever complained about the Big Boy across from Chatterton Jr High School.
And then it was closed.
The Hazel Park Big Boy on 8 mile east of Dequindre and the Detroit Big Boy West of the Armory closed years ago.
So when the Ryan Road Big Boy closed, for no good reason, Warren was left with one Big Boy--the one on 12 and Hoover.
The lack of choices and the drive to get a Slim Jim or Brawny Lad makes it laborious to go eat at BB.
Corporate Big Boy sucks!
On my last trip to St John's Macomb, once I was done with the doctor's, I phoned the 12 mile BB for a carry out.
Service on the phone was excellent Service inside the restaurant was great
The BB's were smaller than I remembered and the fries were cold.
The combination no longer includes salads (corporate greed).
But overall, the BB 2025 combination was a B- Service was very good
Atmosphere was better at the Big Boy on Ryan because it was the neighborhood local restaurant where friends gathered and almost everyone knew one. It was like CHEERS without the booze.
If you really cared about atmosphere, you shouldn't close local restaurants. They tend to draw neighbors and locals-- a much more friendly environment.
Warren is a big @$$ city.
One BB is hardly...
