Blink, and you will miss this tiny little gem on the north side of 8 mile. How do I know? I blinked and missed it for 16 years. More the pity, more the pity, because a little gem it is.
Ah, Detroit, how you spoil me. You spoil me and one day I will pass on, a happy man with a stomach filled with goodies I have relished in my time here. And you've done me such a painful joy in this. You've given me not one, but two outstanding Corned Beef and Pastrami eateries to choose from. When I came to this town so long ago, never did I dream that I would have corned beef like this, and yet here we are. It would be a shame to compare my two favorite delis on the merits of their corned beef, and so I won't. (If you've actually read my prose, you know the other by now).
The House of Reuben has been around for a long time, and there's a good reason for this. The Corned Beef and Pastrami is divine. Just the right bit of fattiness to know that you'll probably regret it, but that you'll love every minute of it. The flavor of the meat is excellent and the selection is right on point.
There is just something truly charming about the moment you walked in. I was in this part of town, which is a rarity, when I saw it on my google map. I'd gotten done with most of my business and was hungry, so I couldn't resist the siren call of a Reuben. But, when I walked in the door? I knew I'd found a nice, new home. The decor is warm and homey. It's all bar stools and aged wood. The store is small, warm and cozy and for a moment, you would swear you weren't on 8 mile, the horns blaring behind you and the life in Detroit just kind of washing away. You can smell the joys of the meat sizzling as soon as you walk in.
Everything is made to order, and you are treated with the kind of warmth of an old friend, regardless if you've ever spoken with the cook and wait staff in your life. If they aren't busy with work and customers, they may just gab away a bit of time, giving you that special feel that it's hard to find in a sit-down restaurant these days. It reminds me of days gone by in smaller towns of America.
The price is around 15-20 dollars a head, so mark that in your minds. You'll watch as the food's cooked before your eyes and unless there's a lunch rush the wait won't be that long. Fair warning: There isn't really a public restroom, so just keep that in mind when you visit. Seating is also limited, so if you do come during a rush it might be a bit packed, but I found that the folks who tend to come to a place like this are warm and friendly enough themselves.
For you corned beef lovers who miss that feel like you're in a small town, do not skip this place. It is worth...
Read moreI unfortunately had a terrible experience with the House of Reuben 8mile. When you order a 12oz. sandwich that is what you expect to get, norhing less. I spoke with the owner, I explained that my sandwich felt underweight. He said, that the meat was cooked, weighed, then wrapped ahead of time. He said a reg. is 6oz. and a jumbo is 12oz.. Now I'd been to several corned beef restaurants looking for what I thought was best, so I literally could feel the difference. I was so sure that I was being cheated, that when I got home I took the meat off the bread and weighed it. There was only 6oz.on 1/2 of sandwich, and 3.2oz. on the other. So, I called to complain. The server was so nice. She volunteered out of her own money to pay for a sandwich for me. When I called to go back the owner said she had no right to make such an offer, to pay for me another sandwich. He then went on to say that the meat is cut first, weighed, then cooked. So the meat will of course weigh less after it's been cooked. Then he blames everyone who makes corned beef, saying this is the way everyone does it. As if I wouldn't know. Sad....it was a really bad experience. So always check your order! Why pay for a large, and get a small. It's not right. I hope this doesn't...
Read moreFirst time eating from here and last time. Got the menu with a 20% off coupon printed on it in our mail box, so thought we would give it a try since we love corned beef. Ordered a corned and Swiss on pumpernickel bread and some corned beef egg rolls. Got home had a burnt corned beef sandwich with mustard and some kind of other sauce on it. Took it back they did remake the sandwich the right way this time without burning it. Get back home sit down to eat the the Swiss cheese tasted funky the corned beef had no flavor at all. Now the corned beef egg rolls there were really good but they gave them with duck sauce, ummm any other place always gives you them with thousand Island. Only reason they got any stars is because they didn't have a problem remaking my sandwich and the egg rolls where good, but will not be ordering from here again. I was told it could have been the cooks at the time who knows, but I was taking with family members about this place before we ordered and told them I would be the test rats for this place lol told them how it was for us, so they might still try it though. Let's see if they have better experience...
