If you're looking for a classic, truck stop, greasy diner, you've found the right place.
I went here on a Saturday morning around 11am and, for an old, run-down restaurant, it's was absolutely packed. Looked to me like it was mostly locals who frequented the establishment because they were all talking to each other and to the staff, which was pretty cool to see.
We had to wait a couple of minutes by the door for a booth to open up, there are only about 10-15 in the entire diner. There were stools available at the counter, but I was with a group, so we needed a little more room.
Once we got our seats, we were immediately waited on by the staff, who was absolutely wonderful, and had our drinks back within a couple of minutes. We then ordered our food and waited....
....and waited. We probably sat for a good 30-45 minutes waiting for our breakfast food to arrive, which seemed pretty slow. The diner was busy and they must have been short-staffed, but it was definitely a long time to wait. Nevertheless, it was hard to be mad when you're in such a cool atmosphere.
And once the food arrived, we realized it was well worth the wait. Obviously, you're not getting anything Michelin star-worthy, but it was probably the best diner food I've had in Virginia. I ordered the #4, which is was a plate of three eggs, home fries, bacon and a side of 3 giant pancakes. It was way too much food to eat, despite the fact I was famished and I basically had to be rolled out of the restaurant when I finished.
The prices were decent, not great. I paid about $10 for my meal and a coffee, which, like I said before was quite substantial.
Overall, this is just a chill place with great people and great food. Don't come here if you're looking for a quick bite or a romantic meal. Rather, stop by on a Saturday morning for breakfast, or at 3am for a late-night meal and just enjoy it for what it is. Talk to the staff, talk to the people around you and prepare to ingest some serious diner grease...I guarantee you'll enjoy it.
TIP: Frost Diner doesn't take credit cards, you have to pay in cash. There's an ATM in the entryway if you need it, but it's one of those old ones so you know there's a stiff processing fee for the cursed soul who...
Read moreWhat a cute spot! Our AirBnb host recommended it, and it was a short walk from her house.
A couple of important notes of front: it's CASH ONLY. There's an ATM onsite. The prices are insanely reasonable and portions are generous.
It's a classic diner in every respect. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The service was fast. The food was absolutely delicious! We had chicken fried steak and eggs (with breakfast potatoes, sausage gravy, and a biscuit), country ham and eggs (with grits and a biscuit), and regular and decaf coffees. Both coffees were fresh and had good flavor (not weak, burned, or overly bitter). The food was classic southern fare, came out quickly, and was truly delicious. The portions were large - neither of us finished our plates. Country ham isn't something you can readily get where we live (Colorado), so that was a treat. There were clearly a lot of regulars, which I always enjoy. We arrived on a Friday at around 9am and did not have to wait for a seat at...
Read moreThere is a spoken rule about smaller establishments. If they are period and quaint, the better the food. This place is a diner, check. They only accept cash, check. They're a small operation with minimal staff, check. It feels like the diner is out of a different time. This is a good thing. You can feel the humanity in the restaurant. To give a recommendation now: I'll come back here again.
The waitress was doing her thing. She memorized our orders and was as timely as one server could possibly be for a whole restaurant. Chef was speaking with some friends while doing his thing. Very close knit.
The food came out, a whole lot at good price, on heaping platters. Buddy got a steak special, and I the country fried steak special. Food for days, enough to fill the belts of two hikers who drove an hour to get to the restaurant.
Thank you folks! You made us feel comfortable and the experience is something we'll try and stop...
